Department of Plant Breeding
SLU's Department of Plant Breeding, located at Alnarp (near Lund and Malmö, southern Sweden), trains students, gives courses and conducts research on agricultural and horticultural crops with overall goal of improving the livelihoods of humankind and our environment through addressing local and global challenges. Through state-of-the-art research, we contribute to efficient and sustainable production of plant based food, feed and industrial products. Our research focuses on developing breeding populations, lines and cultivars with various desirable traits that fit well into eco-friendly and climate resilient crop production. Students are trained through Bachelor, Masters, Licentiate and PhD degree projects within these research areas.

The Department has three divisions of which one focuses on genetics and breeding of crops. Research activities of this unit include genetic diversity analyses of target crops, "omics"-based development of breeding tools, marker-aided and cross-breeding for crop improvement. This Licentiate Degree position within this unit is funded by SLU Grogrund- the Swedish Centre for Breeding of Food Crops.

Duties:
The Department is currently running different projects funded by SLU Grogrund on crops that are important for the future of Swedish agriculture. One of these projects is "Genomic selection in red clover", one of the most important forage crops in Sweden. Now, the Department is seeking a Licentiate Degree student who will join the research team in this project. The person who will be holding this position will be actively working on different aspects of the project including phenotyping and the development of genomic tools and resources for their use in breeding of red clover. Within this project, the student will conduct various hands-on activities in the lab, greenhouse and field. Since this project will be conducted in close collaboration with industry and SLU researchers located at campuses in Umeå and Skara, the student may have short stays at other locations than Alnarp.

Qualifications:
We seek a highly motivated candidate with MSc degree in molecular biology, plant biology, genetics or biotechnology with a strong background in practical molecular laboratory work and bioinformatics. Candidates with good experience and knowledge in modern plant breeding methods are highly encouraged to apply. Experience in programming languages such as R and Python is favorable. Proven skills in spoken and written scientific English are required. Great emphasis will also be placed on the candidate's analytical- and collaborative abilities as well as independence and enthusiasm for the area of research.

Place of work:
