Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

MAX IV is looking for an LDM Scientist to work as a part of the LDM-RIXS group and contribute to the further development of LDM research areas at the lab.

MAX IV currently has a number of LDM-relevant beamlines including FlexPES, FinEstBeAMS, HIPPIE, VERITAS and RIXS @ SPECIES. Each of these beamlines can accommodate different types of gas-phase/liquid-phase measurements, either at a permanent end station or by installation of a mobile end station. The main experimental techniques currently available for LDM research at MAX IV include XPS, multi-coincidence spectroscopy and RIXS and involve a range of sample delivery systems (SDS) including atomic/molecular/cluster beams, liquid jets and aerosol beams. More information regarding the LDM cross-beamline initiative and associated equipment can be found here: https://www.maxiv.lu.se/accelerators-beamlines/beamlines/low-density-matter-at-max-iv/

Would you like to work at one of the brightest lightsources in the world?

MAX IV are looking for an individual with documented experience in aerosol science whose research background will complement already existing competences within the group. You will have an opportunity to work at one of the world's leading light sources and to contribute to further developing aerosol research activities at MAX IV. You must also be willing to further develop your own technical skills with a focus on new research techniques.

You will work across multiple beamlines, where you will be responsible for the maintenance and further development of the aerodynamic lens sample delivery system that exists in-house, the preparation/support of user beam times, and the further development of the aerosol/engineered nanoparticle research community. In addition to the above, you will spend a significant amount of time engaged in a broader range of LDM activities at a number of beamlines and you are expected to build competency with some of the existing LDM instrumentation.

The work tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

Maintenance and further development of the aerodynamic lens setup at MAX IV
Preparation for user beamtimes with the aerodynamic lens
User support for aerosol experiments as local contact for user beamtimes - note that this will at times involve out of hours work or on-call duties
Community development, outreach and information dissemination
Engagement in funding applications with a view to further developing aerosol research/techniques at the lab
Engage in activities/training to broaden their own skill set and develop competency using some of the other LDM instrumentation at MAX IV (e.g. electron spectrometers/coincidence spectrometers/ion trapping, sample delivery systems etc)
Participate in the maintenance/design or build-up of more LDM relevant equipment when the need arises
You are expected to have a strong vision for the further development of aerosol research at MAX IV.

You will have the possibility to apply for beamtimes at MAX IV to conduct your own research using the LDM equipment at MAX IV or to apply for beamtimes at other facilities. Therefore, it is expected that you will have a strong vision with regards to various research projects to pursue whilst employed in this position.

To be successful in this role you must have the following qualifications:

A PhD in physics, chemistry or engineering
Documented experience in the operation of aerodynamic lenses and other aerosol instrumentation (e.g. for aerosol generation/characterization)
Documented background in aerosol research and related fields
Documented experience in the use of one or more spectroscopic techniques for synchrotron research (e.g. x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, coincidence spectroscopy, etc)
Documented experience in working at a large-scale scientific facility (example synchrotron, FEL, etc) as either a user or as a member of staff
Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Below are seen as merits

Documented experience in the use of aerodynamic lenses for a wide-range of research applications (e.g. for climate research, engineered nanoparticle research, etc)
Documented experience in the development of equipment for aerosol research
Experience in developing own research plans
A keen awareness of the state of the art within aerosol science and a concrete vision with regards to the further development of aerosol research at MAX IV.
Experience in outreach - in the form of oral presentations and poster presentations at conferences, the publication of articles and collaborative projects

As a person you are committed and ambitious. You have a strong work ethic, and view challenges as an opportunity to learn. It's very important that you have excellent communication skills, which is demonstrated by your publication record as well as your broad research network. You can work as an independent scientist as well as part of a team. You are curious and creative and have the ability to adapt your research methods and solve problems when unforeseen situations arise.

On call services may apply in the future.

Probation period may apply.
