MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.
The MAX IV Controls and IT team (KITS) deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment and requires close collaboration with the staff in order to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 50 people in total who work in 5 domains in a well organised and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.
Your team
The MAX IV Controls and IT team (KITS) deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software.

The smooth functioning of the MAX IV synchrotron facility relies strongly on the efficient, reliable and flexible operation of its IT infrastructure. The site hosts a vast variety of computer equipment, from the control of scientific instruments to HPC and multi petabyte storage to office computing and printers.

MAX IV are looking for a positive and service minded person to complement our IT Infrastructure team with the day-to-day support of desktop computing. The responsibilities cover everything from procurement of new equipment, OS installations and user administration to trouble shooting and general computer related support to MAX IV staff. There will be a large amount of direct interaction with the end users, hence good communication and people skills are essential. Our site primarily deploys Windows for desktop usage, but we also have a substantial amount of Linux and MacOS installations. The successful applicant is also expected to have good all-round knowledge when it comes to trouble shooting PC hardware.
Your main work tasks will be
- Monitor and triage requests submitted to the help desk.
- OS and software installations on desktop and laptop computers.
- Procurement of computer and AV equipment.
- User account maintenance.
- General help to users solving their day-to-day computer related problems.
To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications
- Extensive experience with installing and managing Windows computers.
- Extensive experience with user management in an AD environment.
- Good knowledge of PC hardware and thorough troubleshooting experience.
- Good knowledge of using Linux from the cli.
- Excellent command of Swedish and English, both spoken and in writing.
Below are seen as merits
- Experience with managing and troubleshooting MacOS computers.
- Experience with VMware.
- Experience with Linux installation and desktop configuration.
- Technical understanding about networking.
As a person you are easy going and enjoy working together with other people. You must be open to discuss new solutions and consider alternative views on the situation. You will be in daily contact with staff that will ask you to solve their problems, good communication skills are essential for a successful candidate.
