Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

You will be part of the Bloch team at the Bloch beamline.

The beamline is split into two branch lines, with one dedicated to an angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) endstation and the other to a spin-ARPES endstation. The beamline consists of a cPGM monochromator with a NIM option, sourced by an elliptically polarizing quasi-periodic undulator. The ARPES end station has been open to general users since 2019. It features a ScientaOmicron DA30L analyzer, with attached chambers for sample preparation and a scanning tunneling microscope (ScientaOmicron VT-XA). The spin ARPES endstation is currently in the installation and commissioning phase, and is expected to be available to users in 2022.

This is a two year appointment, with an estimated start date of August 2021. You will be working on:
• Participating in internationally competitive research projects in collaborations with users and other beamline staff
• Interacting closely with users before, during and after their visits to provide logistical, technical and scientific support.
• Installation and commissioning of the spin-ARPES endstation
• Maintenance and calibration of existing equipment as the need arises

You are aware that a synchrotron beamline is a unusual environment where the success of external users always comes first, and access to equipment is not unlimited as it often is in a home-lab. In exchange, the benefit to you is that when access does become available for your own research, it is access to powerful, world-class facilities. Through interaction with users, you will furthermore obtain exposure to a broad range of research topics and methods. You come to this position not just understanding this tradeoff but ready to fully capitalize on it. You have willingness for user support and the ability to work both unsupervised and in a team.

Qualifications - Primary evaluation criteria:
• Ph.D. degree in physics or related discipline
• Ability to independently execute a research project from conception through measurement, analysis and publication/presentation.
• Experience in acquisition and analysis of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy data
• Fluency in both written and spoken English

Valued additional skills seen as merits:
• Acquisition and analysis of spin resolved ARPES data
• Experience with maintenance of ultrahigh vacuum equipment
• Experience at other synchrotron ARPES facilities and writing beamtime proposals
• Acquisition and analysis of scanning tunneling microscope data
• Sample growth/surface preparation
• Enthusiasm for all aspects of the work: Scientific research, interaction with users and equipment maintenence/development
• Competence in a programming environment such as python, MATLAB or Igor towards data acquisition, analysis and visualization.
• Experience with CAD software (esp. SolidWorks)
