The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a position as "Instrument Scientists in Neutron Spectroscopy".
Description of position/department
The ESS project is in the Final Preparatory Phase for design before construction. Neutron instruments are critical components of ESS. As the ESS will be a long-pulse neutron source; new instrument designs need to be developed to take full advantage of the source time structure. We are therefore seeking experienced scientists to lead the development of innovative neutron instruments at the ESS.
Description of main responsibilities
The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for one or more Instrument Scientist positions, specializing in single-crystal excitations, quasielastic scattering or molecular/chemical spectroscopy.
The successful candidate will work in the Instruments Division with the primary aim to develop new neutron spectroscopy concepts for the long neutron pulses that will be generated at the ESS, as well as contribute to the specifications and design of laboratories that will support the scientific program of these instruments. The instrument suite at ESS will be developed in close collaboration with the user community and the successful candidate is expected to consult with this community while preparing the design and scientific case of the neutron spectrometers. The successful candidate will be expected to prioritize, initiate and lead relevant projects in order to satisfy these objectives.
Instrument scientists at ESS have the opportunity to imagine new ideas for instruments that will bring the largest gains in instrumentation performance in order to address cutting edge science. Up to half the time of the selected candidate will be devoted to pursue their own research at operating neutron research centers. Synergies with the neighboring MAX- IV synchrotron as well as strong links with universities will be encouraged. For especially well-qualified candidates joint appointment at a university in an ESS partner country may be possible.
The successful candidate will be part of the ESS team and lead collaborations on a European level, you therefore must possess excellent communication and written skills in English in order to liaise with different parties relevant for the success of ESS. Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications are a Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in physics, chemistry or biology, experience with neutron instrumentation and neutron science and excellent written and oral skills in English. A strong background in spin and/or atomic or molecular excitations in condensed matter using spectroscopic methods is essential. Preference will be given to those candidates with a recognised international profile in research and direct hands on experience in developing and constructing neutron scattering instrumentation. Terms of contract will be based on qualifications and relevant experience.
Experience of working in an international environment is essential. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
Start date
The position will be filled no later than March 1, 2012.
Application & Contact

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
ESS aim to ensure that staff are employed on the basis of ability and the requirements of the job, and that no applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment because of race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
