The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an Instrument Scientist for Thermal Chopper Spectroscopy.

Description of division
The Neutron Instruments Division within the Science Directorate consists of 9 instrument scientists and post-docs responsible for the design, construction and then operation of the neutron instruments of the ESS. New designs for a wide range of neutron instruments are in the process of being developed, optimized to take full advantage of the unique long-pulse time structure of the neutron source. The ESS instrument scientists have the experience and skills required to perform and lead the development of these innovative neutron instruments and the subsequent construction projects.

Main responsibilities
The primary task is to develop the design of a thermal chopper spectrometer, including evaluation of existing and new technologies and participation in relevant instrument meetings and workshops. The successful candidate will also contribute to the requirements for the sample environments and sample support facilities for the user programme of the instrument. In the case of a permanent appointment, the successful candidate will be required to prioritize, initiate and lead collaboration projects with colleagues in ESS partner countries and, in the longer term, lead an instrument construction project, bringing a new instrument on-line for the European neutron user community.

The instrument suite at the ESS is being developed in close consultation with the European user community and the successful candidate is expected to consult with this community in order to prepare the design and scientific case for thermal chopper spectroscopy.

Independent research is an integral part of the instrument scientist’s duties. The selected candidate will be invited to join in an existing research project based at the University of Copenhagen, on spin dynamics in frustrated magnetism. A candidate with significant previous post-doctoral experience in a scientific area relevant to neutron chopper spectroscopy, will also be given the opportunity to develop their own research project. Up to half the time of the selected candidate will be devoted to pursuing this research interest, preferably at operating neutron research centres. Synergies with the neighbouring MAX-IV synchrotron as well as strong links with universities will be encouraged. In the case of a permanent appointment, ESS will support and encourage the candidate to take up an adjunct position at a university in an ESS partner country, in order to facilitate their own research.

Qualifications
You have a PhD in one of the physical sciences and experience in neutron inelastic scattering, a proactive approach, ability to work both independently and in a team environment, and a keen interest in both instrument development and experimental research. Preference will be given to candidates with a recognized international profile in a research area relevant to polarised neutron scattering, as well as hands-on experience in operation, maintenance, development and construction of neutron scattering instrumentation, especially instruments for neutron chopper spectroscopy.

Your interpersonal and networking skills are excellent and demonstrated by your ability to establish effective relationships and networks inside and outside the organization. You are genuinely interested in teamwork and recognise the value of consulting others in order to succeed. Sharing your expertise as well as continuously developing yourself professionally will be a key success factor. A development project such as this requires the ability to adapt and cope with changing circumstances and as working in an international environment will challenge your ability to handle cultural diversity, it is important that you have successfully managed this in previous employments.

Experience of working in an international environment is essential and we expect you to be fluent in written and spoken English.

What ESS can offer
