There will be millions of Battery Electric Vehicles on our roads the coming years. Did you know that after a battery has served in an electric vehicle, what we call a first life, it can be repurposed and given a second life in a battery energy storage system (BESS)? To enable this circular step the battery must be inspected and evaluated. This is needed to make sure the battery is still in good condition and can provide enough energy and power. In this thesis, you will investigate what level of diagnostics is needed and to propose a comprehensive testing and evaluation process.

At Volvo Energy Battery Optimization and Monitoring - Technology we put a lot of effort into exploring our batteries. It is our task to deliver a well-functioning repurposed product. Doing so, we lay the foundation for the rest of the focus areas in our circular business model to function.

Description of thesis work

The need for a comprehensive evaluation process for returned batteries, before repurposing them, is clear. Each returned battery has had its unique history and has aged differently. Combinations of batteries must be balanced and matched, e.g. in terms of remaining usable energy and state of health, to prevent performance and safety problems in the final assembly. Evaluation and inspection methods, which can include visual inspection or capacity and internal resistance measurements, are an enabler for this. The ambition in this thesis is to define and develop several diagnostics packages. There is however, no standardized way of doing things, nor are the requirements well defined. In this thesis, you will be developing this. The aim is to create a comprehensive inspection and evaluation method for 2nd life batteries that is efficient and leverages our knowledge of the first life use.

Objective

The objective of the thesis to find an answer to the following question: How do we need to evaluate if batteries can be repurposed and given a 2nd life in a BESS?

Key focus areas
Literature review: gathering insights into existing battery inspection and evaluation methods, identifying best practices and highlighting specific challenges for repurposing batteries in BESS.
Method development: understand needs and challenges of cross-functional stakeholders, develop a set of evaluation methods that considers battery pre-conditioning, state of health assessment, and safety/performance evaluations and finally propose a comprehensive testing and evaluation process
End product compatibility: investigate various types of BESS and their specific battery performance requirements, propose a grading scheme that categorizes 2nd life batteries based on compatibility with different BESS applications

Expected outcomes
A comprehensive map of requirements, standards, regulations and best practices for screening repurposed batteries.
A proposal for a testing and evaluation process to screen 2nd life batteries, leveraging both on off-board testing equipment as well as data from 1st life vehicles.
A proposed grading scheme that categorizes 2nd life batteries and indicates their compatibility with different BESS applications.

Suitable background
Master students with interest in batteries, having a background in for example process development, quality and operations, electrical engineering, mechanical and industrial design engineering.
