The Strategic Research function is a central core function at SMT supporting all three divisions, Tube, Strip and Kanthal. We work with long-term strategic goals, to move the company in a materials (r)evolution direction. Our materials are used in the most demanding environments where our products contribute to our customers productivity, process reliability, sustainability and cost efficiency. At the department Strategic Research Labs, we now have an open position as Innovation Leader. The department consists of three sub-units and totally 35 people. The team includes highly skilled engineers, specialists, experts and laboratory technicians. Job SummaryOne of your tasks will be to drive and develop the innovative climate, ability and performance of the Strategic Research organization with the ultimate target to deliver new business concepts to SMT. Those concepts could well be based on new business models beyond the traditional product supply model. This will involve technology scouting and identification of internal and external customer challenges which present firm synergies with our materials competence and capability and thus opportunities for SMT. The work will be conducted in close cooperation with our materials research leaders and technology trend analyst. Your role will significantly strengthen the link of future customer challenges to the strategic portfolio in our research, with responsibility for the documentation and presentation of opportunities. You will be responsible for our internal idea generation tool and process and work, the link between our idea generation process, the strategic research platforms and the divisions products and business development teams. You will coordinate and support innovation activities within our organization and you will also have an operative role as a project leader in conceptualization phase. Travel will be a natural part of your work by visiting customers and relevant technical forums to develop well-founded Business Cases.You may also be involved in, or drive, specific tasks for the Strategic Research management team, e.g. the yearly strategic update.The location for this position is Sandviken, Sweden and you will report to the Director of Strategic Research Labs.Your profileWe are looking for someone with a strong engineering background, a PhD is advantageous, in the field of materials science and with experience from customer interactions, such as technical marketing or other relevant business development work. A strategic mindset is a prerequisite, experience from business strategy work is an advantage as well as experience from managing R&D projects and project teams. As we operate on the global stage, your English skills must be excellent, both verbal and written, while knowledge of Swedish is advantageous. We are sincerely interested in your personality - The position will require extensive collaboration with skilled staff in the Strategic Research function as well as Divisions within SMT. You need to have proven communication and collaboration skills and present a well-developed self-esteem. You are also a true analytical character with good presentation and leadership skills and, with your ability to influence others, you see the possibilities in ideas rather than problems.
