Challenges and opportunities with remote sensing and machine learning in forestry
Research subject :
Soil science
Description:
WIFORCE Research School
Do you want to contribute to the future sustainable use of forests? Apply to join WIFORCE Research School! Biodiversity and the role of forests in climate change are now key social issues that require more knowledge. In order to both sustainably use and safeguard forest biodiversity, a coherent basic science research program is needed that addresses large and complex issues and develops new analytical tools. That's why the WIFORCE Research School, part of the Wallenberg Initiatives in Forest Research (
https://www.slu.se/WIFORCE/en), was created.
We are looking for an industry/collaboration-based PhD student in remote sensing to develop methods that enhance the quality and efficiency of forest management planning. The PhD student will combine remote sensing with machine learning to detect cultural remains, predict terrain accessibility, identify forests with high conservation value, and map small streams. The student will be admitted to a doctoral program at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at SLU in Umeå. The position includes permanent employment with Holmen Skog AB in Umeå. The student will be supervised by a team led by Lars Östlund and William Lidberg (Professor and Associate Senior Lecturer, respectively, at SLU), along with staff from Holmen Skog AB.
