With Industry 4.0 and the digitalization of manufacturing entering our world, we aim to develop solutions where Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Smart Sensors, Internet of Things and Big Data analytics will play a huge role in strengthening our position on the global market. As a result, we have initiated a collaboration with ARRAY - an industrial research school at Mälardalen University (MDH). This is a five-year postgraduate program to strengthen MDH's position as the country's leading University within automation and digitalization applications to match the industry's future needs, strategic priorities and challenges.

We are now looking for an Industrial PhD Student to play an important role in our operations, working together with our Research and Development (R&D) team and our department for Process Development and Production Technology. You will also collaborate with other Sandvik units and participate in networks, like external focus groups within the area and networks with other industry graduates from several major industrial companies, who share our ambition to develop intelligent production systems for the future.We offer good employment benefits and have a long-term business approach, giving us a good working environment with development of both the business and our employees.

Job summary

As a PhD student, you have great opportunity to influence our future direction as we offer you the best of both the academic and the industrial world. Your main task is to run a doctoral project focusing on automation and digitalization together with employees at Kanthal, and within the framework of the ARRAY research school. The work is carried out as a project with focus on one or more process flows within our production in Hallstahammar, where you document, publish and communicate project progress and results. The scope of the work is aimed at finding solutions to improve Quality, Yield and process control using modern digital automation technology.

Your work will be conducted with the support of an R&D supervisor at the company, and in close collaboration with both R&D and our Production Units. You are employed at Kanthal in Hallstahammar and will spend most of your time on-site, with parts of your postgraduate program conducted at MDH.

Your profile
You have completed a Master's degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits or equivalent within Automation, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Engineering Physics or Product and Process Development. Previous experience from the manufacturing industry, automation solutions, IT within processing industry or data analysis is considered advantageous. We consider it important that you have the driving force and motivation to lead long-term development within a multi-year research project. Furthermore, you are skilled in MS Office and have good communication skills in both Swedish and English.

Through your analytical and problem-solving approach, you drive development both independently and in collaboration with others. You are driven by your curiosity into what factors that can push our technological development forward utilizing trends in the field of intelligent production systems. This position consists of both research within a specific area but also participation in development projects in our production related work, whereupon it's important that you like the analytical research as well as the practical work.
