Project: Targeted colonic delivery for local treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases.

We are now looking for an Industrial PhD student in Molecular Pharmaceutics to work on a drug delivery project in collaboration with AstraZeneca, Advanced Drug Delivery, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Gothenburg, Sweden and Department of Pharmacy, Uppsala University.

Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 45,000 students, 7,100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion. The Department of Pharmacy offers an interdisciplinary environment at the center of the pharmaceutical arena. With frontline research, first-rate education and extensive collaborations we constitute an important driving force in the development of our academic field. In this inspiring environment our rich diversity of research groups, several of international prominence, develop and conduct work of great scientific importance.

The research group: The research time of the PhD student will be split equally between Uppsala University and AstraZeneca, Gothenburg. At Uppsala University, the PhD student will be linked to the research group Molecular Pharmaceutics. The group takes a multidisciplinary approach and combines computational chemistry and bioinformatics with cell- and molecular biology, biopharmaceutics, pharmaceutics, and physical chemistry to find new ways to predict and define rate-limiting barriers to the absorption and organ distribution of different types of drugs. We anticipate that our research will provide insights into new mechanisms for drug absorption, disposition, and delivery, which will support development of new therapeutic strategies for efficient oral drug delivery. More information at https://farmaci.uu.se/research/drugdelivery/research/bergstrom/. The position is placed in the research group of Alexandra Teleki (https://www.scilifelab.se/researchers/alexandra-teleki) who is associated with the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab). The overall goal of the Teleki research group is to transform innovative nanomedical approaches to clinically relevant, patient-compliant diagnosis and treatment.

The project: The industrial PhD student will work in the area of oral drug delivery systems with the aim to develop precision treatments for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The project aims to establish a drug delivery system that specifically targets inflamed disease sites in the colon. To achieve this, the PhD student will functionalize drug-loaded nanoparticles with ligands for molecular targets of diseased areas in the colon. The nanoparticle surface chemistry will be tailored using click chemistry-based bioconjugation approaches to control nanoparticle diffusion through the colonic mucus barrier to reach mucosal disease targets. The transport of targeted nanoparticles in the colon will be studied using in vitro artificial mucus models. Therapeutic efficacy will be assessed in vivo in preclinical disease models that recapitulate clinical features of inflammation in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The overall aim of the industrial PhD project is therefore to improve efficacy of orally administered drugs for local treatment of GI diseases and allow the use of targeted nanomedicines with stable and controllable performance in vivo to reach their full potential in the clinic.

Qualifications: Applications from highly motivated candidates are welcome. The successful candidate should have a Master of Science in Pharmaceutics, Drug Discovery and Development, Chemical/biochemical engineering, Biomedicine, Biotechnology or similarly relevant field, and have good communication skills in oral and written English. Previous experience of any of the core subjects, laboratory experience, industrial exposure and collaboration and entrepreneurial skills are meritorious.

How to apply: The application, written in English, is submitted through the application portal of AstraZeneca and should contain:

*

Cover letter in which the applicant motivates their interest for the position and states relevant qualifications.
*

CV including at least two references (phone number and email)
*

Copies of relevant certificates, degrees and grades.
