Department of Forest Resource Management
WIFORCE Research School

Do you want to contribute to the future sustainable use of forests? Apply to join WIFORCE Research School! Biodiversity and the role of forests in climate change are now key social issues that require more knowledge. In order to both sustainably use and safeguard forest biodiversity, a coherent basic science research program is needed that addresses large and complex issues and develops new analytical tools. That's why the WIFORCE Research School, part of the Wallenberg Initiatives in Forest Research (https://www.slu.se/WIFORCE/en), was created.

Integrated planning of timber production and nature conservation
Research subject Forest management
Description
We are looking for someone who wants to develop new decision support tools for co-planning of timber production and nature conservation, two important objectives in forestry. The work involves developing knowledge and tools for habitat modelling through 1) mapping existing habitats, 2) analysing the effects of different trade-offs between timber production and biodiversity under the influence of climate change, and 3) developing optimisation models based on heuristic and AI-based methods. The results will help forest managers and other decision-makers to balance economic and ecological sustainability and to ensure that nature conservation measures are effective and comply with current policies for sustainable forestry.

You will be admitted to a doctoral programme at the Department of Forest Resources Management at SLU and employed at Skogforsk. You will be supervised by a team led by Karin Öhman (Professor of Forest Planning at the Department of Forest Resources Management, SLU) with assistant supervisors from both Skogforsk and SLU.

The Department of Forest Resource Management conducts education and research in the areas of forest planning, forest remote sensing, forest inventory and sampling, forest mathematical statistics and landscape studies. The department is also responsible for the implementation of the ongoing environmental monitoring programs the National Forest Inventory, The National Inventories of the Landscapes in Sweden, Terrestrial Habitat Monitoring and the Butterfly and Bumblebee Inventory. In total, we are about 110 employees. http://www.slu.se/srh.

Skogforsk is the Swedish forestry research institute and works with applied research and innovation in close collaboration with the forestry industry and other stakeholders. Skogforsk's vision is 'World-class forestry for sustainable development' and its mission is to develop and communicate knowledge, services and products that contribute to sustainable development in forestry for the benefit of society. Skogforsk is located in Uppsala, Sävar in Västerbotten and Ekebo in Skåne and has around 150 employees, 80 of whom are researchers. https://www.skogforsk.se/

Qualifications
You should have a university degree in forestry or biology with a strong interest in quantitative methods or be a civil engineer or mathematician with a strong interest in forestry issues. You should have an interest in how to use optimisation methods to solve complex planning problems. Strong emphasis is placed on analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently and co-operatively, and personal qualities such as drive and interpersonal skills. Good written and oral communication skills in English are required. At Skogforsk, the main working language will be Swedish.

Place of work
You will be based primarily at SLU in Umeå but will spend one fifth of your time at Skogforsk, primarily in Uppsala.

Forms for funding or employment
PhD position at SLU with 80% study activity and 20% work at Skogforsk over five years, as well as permanent employment at Skogforsk.

Starting date
According to agreement.
