Industrial Ph.D. Student - Engine Tribology

At RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT you will be a key contributor to the next generation outstanding luxury cars from Volvo. As INDUSTRIAL Ph.D. STUDENT within the area of Engine Tribology you will be a part of our Ph.D. student program. The intention is to develop technical specialists, secure competence supply by networking with academies and contribute to Volvo products by highly educated personnel. The close connection between research, advanced engineering and car projects contribute to Volvos reputation as high-tech and research oriented company. The target is to develop important contacts and build an international network. Furthermore, you will acquire expert knowledge within the area that has great potential to influence fuel economy of cars in a positive direction and therefore contribute to a better global environment.

The aim of the research project is to develop practical useful calculation methods for dimensioning of bearings and prediction of friction losses. Your work will include studies of hydrodynamic bearings in combustion engines considering both full hydrodynamic lubrication and mixed friction with an advanced model of the lubrication and elastic deformation. The models should be verified with experimental results.

The employment includes approximately 3.5 years as Ph.D. student at Imperial College in London. After graduation you will return to Volvo Cars in Gothenburg and take an important role as an analyst within Engine Development. You will be working with analysis of engine friction with focus on minimizing fuel consumption and further strengthen our ability to develop fuel efficient engines.

To successfully accomplish the project, you should have strong analytical skills, a passion for seeking new knowledge and you are driven by going deep into the area of engine tribology. University degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics is a must, as well as an excellent English language level, verbally and in writing. You should also be a good listener and have great communication skills. Meritorious is previous professional or educational experience in the area of tribology.
