Would you like to contribute to the establishment of new technologies for the discovery of safe innovative medicines by doing do your PhD at AstraZeneca?

As part of our collaboration with SciLifeLab and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, AstraZeneca offers an Industrial PhD student position with focus on bioinformatics, molecular cell biology and investigative toxicology. This fixed term position is placed in both Gothenburg and Stockholm and regular travels between the sites will be required.

At AstraZeneca we win through science, it's at the heart of our every success. That is only possible when we all work together - we'll always make sure you're clear about how your role is connected to our wider mission to really show what science can do.

One of the major challenges in the discovery of innovative medicines is to ensure they are safe enough to provide novel treatments for patients. Within Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmune (RIA) Safety, a global department that is part of our Drug Safety and Metabolism function, we apply innovative science to drive the design and selection of safer medicines for RIA diseases. As true Drug Hunting partners we contribute to the selection of novel drug targets, design of therapeutic concepts, identification and optimization of new chemical series of small molecules and a range of other modalities as well as selection of novel candidate drugs. We develop and apply cutting edge in silico, molecular, cellular and in vivo technologies to push the boundaries of predictive safety science and investigative toxicology and bring better, safer medicines to patients sooner.

Research project

To understand and predict the therapeutic effect and toxicological profile of novel candidate drugs for respiratory diseases, we aim to characterize and integrate the cellular and molecular effects in the intact tissue. Typically, little is known regarding the anatomical fate and local effects of inhaled compounds in the lung. This project aims to generate a highly-resolved spatial map of the lung transcriptome by establishing a lung-specific spatial transcriptomics method. This method will be applied to mechanistically investigate the effects of inhaled pharmaceuticals on the lung transcriptome in a spatially-resolved manner.

Essential requirements

* Master 's degree in cell/molecular biology, pharmacology, toxicology, bioinformatics, biomedicine, systems biology or other relevant field, with strong problem-solving capabilities
* Theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience with molecular and cellular biology techniques
* Theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience with programming in R and Python, as well as other techniques and technologies relevant to data and bioinformatics programming, such as data quality control, machine learning algorithms, data analysis, clustering and visualization, and a genuine interest to apply computational methods to answer biological questions
* Strong communication and presentation skills, ability to work efficiently in teams and in collaboration with multiple stakeholders.
* A social personality with a strong desire to drive personal development that contributes to an open, positive, collaborative working climate.

Desired Requirements

* Experience with spatial transcriptomics and analysis of complex transcriptome data
* Experience with highly-multiplexed RNA hybridization or sequencing
* Experience in histology and fluorescence microscopy
* Understanding of the drug discovery process from experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
* Solid understanding of investigative toxicology, safety and risk assessment.
