Kanthal is part of Sandvik Group, and a world-leading brand for products and services in the areas of industrial heating technology and resistance material. We develop innovative solutions in creative partnerships with our customers, and with a strong commitment to reduce the environmental impact. With skilled people and pioneering technology, we support some of the world's most exciting and biggest projects.

The Materials Development department currently consists of eleven employees that develop metallic and ceramic alloys intended for high temperature purposes, and our challenge is to constantly be at the forefront of material development. To join our journey, we are now looking for an Industrial PhD student for an exciting collaboration between Kanthal and Chalmers University of Technology. We offer you an opportunity to truly impact our technology and business, and a chance to build a network and a career within Kanthal and Sandvik!

Welcome to the project
The project is aimed at developing a new generation of alumina forming ceramic composites for structural applications in demanding environments at high temperatures above 1000 °C. The project will include optimization of the chemistry and structure of molybdenum silicide ceramics aiming for mechanical properties such that state of the art FeCrAl based materials are outperformed. This will be achieved by a systematic exploration of the chemical composition and microstructure of the composite system to obtain a balance between high temperature oxidation/corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The alloying development will be supported by thermodynamic modelling and advanced characterization techniques to reveal the underlying mechanisms.

The result is twofold: (i) it will increase the competitiveness of Swedish industry through new products in the field of High temperature materials and allow Kanthal to explore completely new markets; (ii) it will lead to higher thermal efficiencies in many energy generating consuming processes, thereby directly contribute to a more sustainable future.

Your responsibilities
You're employed by Kanthal and is expected to be in Hallstahammar about 20% of the time, and the rest of the time at Chalmers, and you have supervisors supporting you at both locations. You perform ordinary research tasks, including literature studies as well as the actual preparation and execution of experiments. To ensure successful outcomes of our projects, both now and in the future, you thoroughly analyze the results and write reports.

Your profile
We're looking for someone with a degree within the areas of technology or natural science, at least a Degree of Master of Science (60 credits), preferably within Materials Science, Physics or Chemistry. Previous academic or industrial work experience in relevant areas is an advantage. To succeed in this role, it's also important that you have some experience from experimental analysis methodology, and as we operate on the global stage, your English skills must be advanced, verbally and in writing. Along with your skills, we're also truly interested in your personality. Your structured and curious mindset combined with your ambitious and independent working style are your keys to success in this role.
