This is your opportunity to contribute to a light, reliable and cost effective base chassis optimized for battery electric vehicles.

The research project is performed in cooperation with KTH Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering and the Centre ECO2 for vehicle engineering. Your position at Scania will be within the base chassis design team at Research & Development. You will work in close cooperation with several expert teams e.g. CAE, testing, materials technology within Scania Research & Development and VW group. Collaboration with external partners from different disciplines will also take place during the assignment based on different areas during the research.

There will be two academic supervisors at KTH Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering dedicated for the assignment.

Assignment
As the total cost of ownership is one key factor considered when purchasing heavy transport vehicles, a holistic approach is to be taken into account when developing future chassis for battery electric vehicles. The research will focus on the potential of fibre reinforced composites in the load carrying structure of battery electric heavy transportation vehicles. The main scope of the PhD student assignment will be divided into following packages:

• Modularization of load carrying structures for heavy vehicles

Modular setup and performance steps
Definition of strategic interfaces
Local needs for customer adaptations
Suitable materials and manufacturing
Influence on vehicle properties and performances
Business case analysis

• Interface definition and design

Interface design
Production and assembly aspects
Impact on durability, robustness and fatigue life
Environnemental impact on composite structures
Damage detection methods

• Lifecycle analysis

Suitable fibre composite component manufacturing methods.
Production processes stability and capability.
Prediction of service life
Adhesive joint inspection
Adequate repair methods
End of life and recycling strategies

The project has also the intention to develop possible new initiatives or collaborations within the Centre for ECO2 Vehicle Design.

Your Profile
As PhD student you are expected to have analytical and problem solving skills with methodical approach. The successful candidate likes to work both independently and as a team member. Creativity and ability to challenge the application of non-conventional techniques is expected.

Master of Science education within mechanical, aerospace or vehicle engineering. In addition to academic merits, work experience from CAD design and fibre composites is meritorious for the position. You are fluent in communication and writing in English, Swedish is meritorious.
