The department Maintenance, Investments & Metrology provide metrology expertise, lending of instrumentation, design and service of development tools for testing departments. The group Measurement Tools Strategies & Support is a key player to initiate and lead the technical development within Measurement. Together with us you have the opportunity to establish and develop relationships with almost all technological areas of the car development and analyze the after sales vehicle engineering data. Role description
As an Industrial PhD student within Data Science you will research on methods and tools for on-board off-board distributed data processing and analysis of vehicle data. The aim is to efficiently collect and process the increasing amount of data and to transform it into useful knowledge. The main research question will focus on the scientific foundation and methods for a platform that enables distributed on-board data processing in vehicles. In the context of knowledge discovery, this will require data to be accessed and queried in a distributed and location-transparent fashion so that traditional offline analysis can be complemented with research in the following areas:
* Live data analysis and subsequent
* Continuous aggregation and transfer of statistical information from thousands of vehicles with consistent and deterministic intra- and inter-vehicle parallel and distributed analysis.
* Development of statistical and machine learning methodologies in a parallel and distributed environment.
The project is a collaboration between Volvo Cars, Volvo Group Truck Technology, Chalmers University of Technology, Fraunhofer Chalmers Centre and Alkit Communications AB. Location of employment is at Volvo Cars, Gothenburg. You will be a part of the big data group at Volvo Cars, working closely with a Technical expert and additional participation in company wide data science network.
Required qualifications
To qualify as an Industrial PhD student, you must have a solid background in Computer Science and Engineering or in a related discipline, corresponding to a master's level degree. The ideal candidate for the position has a strong background in distributed computing and networked systems, including algorithmic aspects. Further experience with interdisciplinary projects or background in data mining, machine learning and data science is helpful.
Meritorious skills:
* Experience in stream processing within the big data environments such as Spark, Flink and Storm etc.
* Previous experience working with scientific or engineering data
* Experience with NOSQL database systems
Personal qualities
As a person you are an independent and self-driven team-player with a rational mind-set and strong problem-solving skills. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are needed. You have the ability to communicate results to a non-technical audience and to present complex information in a clear, efficient and simple way.
