Industrial Ph.D. Candidate- CAE for composite structures

As Industrial Ph.D. Candidate in the project "Efficient design methodology for composite vehicle structures through numerical simulations" within the department of Durability and section for CAE Durability, you will be a part of our post-graduate program. In the intention to meet the future need for vehicle energy consumption a technology step by introducing carbon fiber composites (CFRP) on structural parts is foreseen. A cost-efficient, yet robust, design methodology for CFRP car components must be developed. Composite design must rely on supporting validation tests to a greater extent than metal designs. There is a scope for significant reduction in the element and component tests required by replacing physical tests with numerical analyses based on computational methods.

Department of Durability has around 100 employees and consultants and is responsible for the attributes Strength&Durability, Corrosion, Aging of Polymeric Materials and Fire Safety. The responsibility includes target setting, CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) analysis, testing in laboratory and on proving ground. The CAE team performs strength, fatigue and load analyses for the design areas Body and Exterior, Interior, and Chassis, mainly in the development phase in new car projects. All through the projects there is a close cooperation with design engineers, attribute leaders and test engineers. In parallel with the work in car projects, method development and correlations are performed to enhance the CAE capability.

The aim of the research project is to identify and further develop industrial efficient CAE based design tools for relevant high performance composite vehicle applications including sandwich concepts in all design phases; on early design stage as well as for validation of final design. On building block level as well on complete vehicle level.
The Ph.D. student will be focusing on:
• How to handle anisotropic materials efficiently?
• How to secure/visualise that correct fibre lay-up and ply thicknesses are defined?
• What simplifications can be made at which analysis level, what are the key issues that must be in focus?
• How to reduce the building block test campaign by replacing physical testing with virtual analysis using CAE tools?

The first four to five years of employment will be dedicated to the research in co-operation with Chalmers University of Technology. After dissertation, the Ph.D. will take on a strategically important role related to the area of expertise within Research & Development at Volvo Cars in Göteborg. The research students spend 80% of their time with their research and 20% with issues determined by Volvo Cars.

To successfully accomplish the project, you should have very strong analytical skills, act independently and take initiatives. You are at least M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent with emphasis in computational mechanics or polymer engineering. You must have an excellent English language level, verbally and in writing. You should also be a good listener and have strong communication skills. Meritorious is previous professional experience in the areas of Polymeric materials, numerical analysis procedures or CAE.
