Renewable fuels are a key factor in the pursuit to provide sustainable transport solutions and are a prioritized area for Scania. Especially for long haulage transports, renewable fuels offer a fast-track to lower their carbon foot print. At the same time, society poses ever more stringent requirements for lower emissions, not least regarding particulate matter. In order to meet future requirements, a system-thinking and a close cooperation among different academic disciplines, biofuel producers, vehicle manufacturers and suppliers of exhaust aftertreatment system will be needed.

The FFI project Future Particulate Filters for Next Generation Biofuels is such a cooperation with the focus on how the use of an advanced lignin-based biofuel, as well as other biofuels (e.g. HVO, FAME and biogas), affect the particulate emissions and the performance of the exhaust aftertreatment system. Especially, the project will address how particles from biofuels are filtered, accumulated and regenerated in the particulate filter. The aim is to enable optimization of fuel, engine and particulate filter in order to maximize the powertrain efficiency and minimize emissions of harmful particles.

Your role
Your role as an industrial Ph. D. student is to plan and perform scientific studies on the ash and soot deposition in particulate filters. The research project includes both practical and theoretical parts. A significant part of the project is to set up and commission a test rig for accelerated ash accumulation financed by Scania but placed at Process Technology, KTH. The rig will be used to study the soot and ash deposition in the filters and you will be responsible for designing and conducting the experiments in collaboration with researchers from KTH, Scania and the other partners of the project. Moreover, engine tests and other studies will be performed both at Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) at KTH and at Scania. An important part of the project is also to maintain contact and spread the results between the different partners in the project, i.e. Scania, KTH, RenFuel and Johnson Matthey.

As support you will have close contact with researcher both at academia and at Scania and the other industrial partners.

Your profile
The most important demand we have on you is that you see research and science as something fun and that you have a burning interest for learning new stuff. It is also good if you like doing practical work in the lab, although hopefully that does not mean that you shy away from theoretical discussions and the use of computers. Moreover, it is seen beneficial if you have good communication skills and can write and speak English well. Formally, you have a relevant master's degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering physics or similar.

About the industrial Ph.D. position
The industrial Ph.D. position is a full-time position formally placed at NXPK (Catalyst and Filter Performance) but you will in practice work at YTMC (Materials Technology for Powertrain Fluids and Aftertreatment) during the 4 year period that the project runs for. A condition for the position is that the applicant is approved as a Ph. D. student by KTH, i.e. fulfil the basic demands for doctoral studies at KTH.
