The position as an Industrial doctoral student is a collaboration with the department of Nuclear physics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. This project is financially supported by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research.

PhD project description: Advanced Radwaste Characterization Prototype
As an industrial doctoral student from AB SVAFO at KTH you are expected to primarily focus on your PhD project. The project aims at developing a prototype system for advanced characterization of low and intermediate level nuclear waste predominately packaged in legacy waste containers. The work involves research and development of the Neutron Gamma Emission Tomography (NGET) technique developed by the team at KTH as well as combinations with other established techniques for imaging and characterization of nuclear waste.
At SVAFO you will work with our experts in radiophysics, chemistry and waste management in investigations, planning and execution of measurement campaigns concerning various waste forms. The work may also involve investigations on applicability and evaluation of new or existing technologies for characterization as well as handling and processing equipment for radioactive and potentially chemically complex wastes.

Scope of work
• Development of photon and neutron detection for imaging and analysis of radioactive materials
• Implementation of test rigs to simulate various waste forms
• Research & development on a prototype system with a high degree of automatization and throughput
• Planning and co-ordination of measurement campaigns
• Measurements, evaluation and reporting of results for various waste forms
• Analysis of suitable techniques and processes for handling of radioactive waste

Qualifications
• Master of Science, or the equivalent
• Experience with techniques for characterization of radionuclides and hazardous waste is meritorious
• Experience with signals, sensors and systems technology is meritorious
• Proficient in English with a strong intent to learn Swedish during the PhD studies
The position requires well developed analytical skills and attention to details as well as a strong safety awareness.

Eligibility
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following: passed a degree at advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

What we offer, an exciting and rewarding employment at SVAFO in combination with a PhD position at the department of Nuclear physics, KTH. You will be given a great deal of individual responsibility for planning and combining your work and study duties. The studies are expected to result in a doctoral degree within four years or at the latest within five years.

Location, Studsvik ca 100 km south of Stockholm Sweden, and KTH (Stockholm) for the work related to the PhD studies.
