Hardware in Loop Engineer Active Safety, rig and test method development for Autonomous Driving vehicles

At Volvo Cars, we are striving to be world leading in Driver Assistance and Active Safety (often also called ADAS - Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and Autonomous Driving (AD), offering customers most comprehensive, convenient and safe ADAS functions as well as being the first to offer truly autonomous (non-supervised) vehicles. Before the new systems can be released, it is required to rigorously verify their operation, performance and safety in changing and unpredictable traffic situations. Because of high, and ever increasing complexity of ADAS and AD systems, the amount of test vehicle driving needed to verify their performance, becomes prohibitively long and expensive. Instead, virtual testing in Hardware in Loop (HIL) rigs and Software in Loop (SIL) environments must be adopted.

Driver Assistance and Active Safety CAE group supports the Active Safety department at Volvo Car Group by developing and maintaining ADAS&AD Domain HIL rigs, and supporting the HIL testing processes. We build the rigs, integrate the sensor systems, ECUs, steering and braking electronics and hardware, and model the rest of the vehicle as well as traffic environment. When the rig is built, we assist the test teams in setting up and running the HIL tests, and even implement new test methods. We collaborate closely with function, sensor and actuator hardware and software development and testing teams. The group today consists of 34 engineers, of which 15 are working with HIL and the rest with Model- and Software-in-Loop environments and virtual sensor testing methods.

As a Hardware in loop Engineer Active Safety, you will be a member of the Active Safety HIL team and participate in a broad range of activities: planning, building and running HIL environment, integrating sensors, ECUs and actuators, developing and deploying models for rest of vehicle and environment, developing test procedures and supporting test activities. You will be collaborating within and outside the team to get the expert knowledge about HIL methods, but even about ADAS and AD systems.

We are now searching for motivated, interested and skillful individual with strong academic records and documented experience who wants to be engaged in, and provide key contribution to, building HIL rig and developing test methods for autonomous driving vehicles. There are many challenges, among these redundant steering and braking architecture and software, multiple new sensors and new ECU platform that need to be integrated in the rig and enable verification of autonomous platform.
