Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world's top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light. As a national laboratory, MAX IV is operated in agreement with governmental regulations, and in compliance with major funders such as the Swedish Research Council (VR) and the Wallenberg Foundation. 250 people are currently employed at MAX IV Laboratory, and 16 beamlines are funded. The facility is in a ramp-up phase with 3 beamlines now receiving users and 13 more scheduled to be commissioned and built to receive users within the next few years. The facility is dimensioned for 25-28 beamlines.

The MAX IV Controls and IT team (KITS) deliver solutions to the whole MAX IV organisation in the areas of control system hardware, controls software applications, infrastructure and networking, information management and scientific software. This is a dynamic and highly challenging environment and requires close collaboration with the staff in order to understand the needs and be effective in forming solutions. We are around 50 people in total who work in 5 domains in a well organised and agile way. We hold values of lean management, knowledge spread, user autonomy, continuous improvement and flexibility as guiding principles for our work.

The smooth functioning of the MAX IV synchrotron facility relies on the efficient and flexible operation of the computing infrastructure.

Experiments located at the MAX IV beamlines collect data for scientific analysis. This data sets need to be stored and made accessible to compute resources. For this, the MAX IV IT Infrastructure team is operating a tiered high-performance storage system designed for high I/O rates, large volumes and high availability. The challenges to the system design come from the ever-increasing data rates provided by new generations of detector systems, as well as the raising capabilities of the HPC infrastructure and scientific applications.

We are looking for a new member to enlarge our data storage engineering team. The successful candidate will participate, as part of the MAX IV Infrastructure Team, in the operation and scale-out of our Spectrum Scale installation, the deployment and operation of the upcoming long-term storage facility, and play an important role in the design and development of the system as needed to satisfy the future requirements. We provide the opportunity to work within a small but competent team, in a challenging environment and with state-of-the art high performance systems from leading vendors.

The successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to the future development, and be able to follow and analyse the trends and new developments in storage technology.

Key Work Tasks:
• OS and Spectrum Scale upgrades
• Performance evaluation and tuning
• Integration with other components of the IT infrastructure, such as beamline data acquisition systems, HPC cluster, data transfer system and cloud storage solutions
• Evaluation of new releases, features and SW components
• Participation in collaborative projects within MAX IV, other Lund University units and national computing infrastructures

Required qualifications:
• Extensive experience with cluster storage systems; expertise in GPFS a strong plus
• Experience with operating tape storage systems
• Solid understanding of the Linux operating system
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Fluent in English

Additional meriting qualifications:
• BSc level or higher in Computer Science or Engineering; or equivalent experience
• Experience working in scientific environment
• Working experience with Infiniband

Probation period may apply.

On call services may apply in the future.
