Partnership being the new leadership is an important way of working at V.A.S and we know that we need to partner up to solve the big technology opportunities we see ahead. For this reason, we have entered into partnerships with developers of autonomous driving systems like Aurora. But in parallel, the V.A.S. technology organization is responsible in developing our own virtual driver for the confined segment (e.g. quarry and mining).
This is the role
At V.A.S we develop autonomous transport solutions for three segments - quarries & mining, ports & logistic centers, and Hub 2 Hub on highway transportation. The product organization of V.A.S. acts in close collaboration with our technology and commercial organization. While the technology organization is responsible for the development of our own virtual driver, dedicated to the confined segment, the commercial organization handles all commercial aspects, the customer interface, and the operational execution of the autonomous transport system. The product organization then is responsible to create the autonomous transport system per segment, integrating either our own virtual driver, or the externally developed virtual drivers with our vehicles and machines, including system verification and validation (incl. homologation). Other parts of responsibility include infrastructure and supporting the operations of installed autonomous solutions, in tight connection with the commercial teams. In addition, they are responsible to provide support for HW and SW matters which may arise at customer sites.
As Head of Product we expect product ownership per segment and the ability to define the fit for purpose autonomous transport system per segment. You will also work tightly with our development partners, like Aurora and others. As we source our vehicles and machines from within the Volvo Group, a close collaboration with other Volvo Group functions is essential.
You will lead teams which together allow and enable V.A.S. to define, build, validate & verify, and roll-out our autonomous transport systems. Transport Systems is the function within the V.A.S. product organization, where based on customer segments, externally developed virtual drivers or the internal developed virtual driver are integrated into our vehicles and machines, supported with the required infrastructure. Creating the transport system is done via existing teams, supported by program and project Managers and in close collaboration with the V.A.S. technology organization, our colleagues from Group Truck Technology, Volvo Construction Equipment Technology and our technology partners (e.g. Aurora).
The role requires relevant experience and competence for the development and execution of large complex engineering projects, best within the autonomous space. It is important that the role is knowledgeable about the required components of a full stack autonomous transport system and able to provide technology leadership to the organization. As V.A.S. is a start-up within Volvo Group, one of our key objectives is the scaling of our autonomous transport systems - hence the role includes the responsibility to establish the abilities to scale our autonomous transport systems.
You will also ensure that your function is properly resourced in all required respects and has the capacity, commitment and competence to achieve what is planned and agreed.
This role will report to the President and Head of Volvo Autonomous Solutions and be part of the Volvo V.A.S executive management team.
This is you
You have an extensive leadership experience, preferably combined with rich experience from product development and portfolio management in the automotive industry. You have worked on both, strategic and operational levels in an international and multicultural environment. You demonstrate a clear vision, a global mindset and have a proven track record of successfully developing people and technology. You can deal with ambiguity, the uncertainty of change, and you are ready to face challenges. Your leadership style is characterized by managerial courage, technology and business acumen, and trust. As our new Head of Product we believe you combine software & technology experience with effective people leadership and embrace all aspects of diversity, safety, quality and innovation.
You have a track record of extensive professional experience within the automotive or engineering industry, and you bring a great interest and expertise in new technologies and automation. An entrepreneurial frame of mind is crucial, as is a curious mindset and a can-do attitude above all. Customer and technology focus is always on top of your agenda, and you have a pragmatic and solution-oriented mindset - coupled with good understanding of autonomous technology and its opportunities. This implies a clear and deep understanding of our industry verticals and the requirements for the respective autonomous transport system. To work in close collaboration with the customer is key, as well as to collaborate effectively within our business area and with other AB Volvo units to efficiently secure the right technology management.
We strongly believe you are a truly inspiring leader, able to develop and support people, you enable the business to scale and grow, to reach full potential. You are fluent in English, both written and spoken and can communicate in a clear and inspiring way. You have a Master degree in Electronics Engineering or the equivalent.
