The arena
The Head of Medicinal Chemistry is a principal role in the AZ Research Area, where the role holder has a direct impact on R&D Discovery output through effective and productive leadership of their department, and overall multidisciplinary scientific influence on Discovery activities. The Head of Medicinal Chemistry will have a major impact on strategic development of the department. The role is a forward looking role, ensuring both that science is delivered today and that the people, science and capabilities are fit for future challenges and opportunities.
As the Head of Medicinal Chemistry you define the overall strategy for personnel and scientific development of the Department, ensuring alignment with business objectives. You will Lead Medicinal Chemistry department, providing direction in terms of science, projects and people. The role requires a high level of interactive, effective communication to set a clear direction for the department and to directly advise others at a high level. Manages high level risk by making complex judgments developing innovative solutions and applying comprehensive cross-functional and industry understanding.
The role
The Head of Medicinal Chemistry are accountable for managing all aspects of the output of the department, setting and maintaining the high scientific standards, and developing staff to maximise their potential. Ensuring flexible resourcing of projects, providing high quality chemistry from target identification through C1 delivery of candidate drugs according to agreed priorities.
Minimum requirements:
This role will normally require a PhD (or similar experience) and extensive pharmaceutical industry experience in medicinal chemistry, including years of leading significant sized teams of highly qualified personnel. You are an internationally recognised scientist with a proven track record of innovation and milestone delivery in several drug discovery projects.
You also have ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in medicinal chemistry. This role demands in-depth people management experience.
