IMED Respiratory, Inflammation & Autoimmunity (RIA) AstraZeneca R&D, Gothenburg, Sweden, seek to recruit a Head of Department Medicinal Chemistry.

The arena

The Medicinal Chemistry department is a critical unit within the IMED RIA, where novel ideas for drugs are to be discovered and developed in a strong cross-functional environment to meet the unmet medical need for patients with lung diseases.

Job description

The Head of Medicinal Chemistry is a principal role in the IMED RIA, where the role holder has a direct impact on R&D Discovery output through effective partnerships and collaborations with internal and external stakeholders. The role holder will have a major impact on the strategic development of the IMED RIA, ensuring that the portfolio is delivered today and that IMED RIA science and capabilities are fit for future challenges and opportunities.

The successful candidate is an internationally recognised scientist with a proven track record of innovation and milestone delivery in several drug discovery projects. In addition, excellent communication skills and an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with an entrepreneurial attitude and delivery focus.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the IMED RIA Medicinal Chemistry department as a role-model leadership figureTo set the direction and lead the implementation of the strategic vision for the future RIA Medicinal Chemistry Department including the build of the new modality platform, continued build of inhalation drug design, strengthening of computational chemistry, and additional recent scientific developments relevant for the discipline
To drive the development and progression of a portfolio of IMED pre-clinical and early clinical opportunities with the best suited modality, which will support the IMED RIA in achieving its business objectives and the delivery of the IMED RIA strategy
To achieve scientific excellence at all levels ensuring highest quality research is carried out
To raise the visibility and profile of RIA Medicinal Chemistry within and outside AZ
Build and maintain a network to key leading research institutions

Contributions as member of the IMED RIA LTSupport development of winning disease area strategies for the IMED, driving portfolio value including delivery of positive POP/POC, demonstrating therapeutic relevance with high probability of successful market access and delivery of valuable new medicines.
Contribute to the content of the agreed business plan and execute against it.
Ensure agile response of IMED business plan to significant changes in the external and competitive environment.

Key Deliverables
Achieve scientific leadership in the area of modern medicinal chemistry with demonstrated impact on the field
Drive the identification and delivery of the best project opportunities regardless of source and modality and ensure the most critical experiments are carried out
Continuously monitor the external environment to identify opportunities, threats and risks in a timely manner.
Ensure that the Medicinal Chemistry position is fully integrated into the IMED strategy and portfolio reviews.
Contribute with knowledge and expertise from a Medicinal Chemistry perspective in the activities required to deliver the Biology Area Strategies and Business Plan for the IMED.

Education:
PhD or MD and post-doc experience

Requirements and Qualifications:
Will be an internationally recognised Scientist with a proven track record of innovation and milestone delivery in several drug discovery projects
Strong publication track record
Current academic affiliation (e.g. adjunct professor) is a plus
Proven entrepreneurial and innovation driven leadership abilities in a drug discovery environment with demonstrable knowledge of pre-clinical R&D.
A strong track record of building successful internal/external partnership and collaboration relationships, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and awareness.
Experience and excellent understanding of the Therapeutic Area
Understanding of payer, regulatory and commercial issues in the pharmaceutical industry.
