ESD-26783

Imagine what we could learn if we could build a microscope so powerful that it could look deep inside the very materials that the universe is made from. A microscope that could actually let us see the atoms and molecules that substances are made from. Imagine the new discoveries we could make, the new materials we could develop and how much we could learn about ourselves and our universe.

The European Spallation Source is the mother of all microscopes! It is one of the most exciting, innovative and ground-breaking, "Big Science" projects under construction today. Research with neutrons lies behind some of the most important materials and innovations which improve our everyday lives, our health and our environment - and ESS will be the most powerful neutron microscope when fully operational in 2027.

Others have built telescopes that allow us to look into the deepest regions of space. Now we are building a microscope so powerful it will allow us to the study the smallest objects - atoms - in the finest detail.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

The ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to becoming an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are now looking for a Head of Finance and Business Control (F&BC). As such you will lead, manage and develop the F&BC division, consisting of 13 employees, ensuring that work is carried out according to internal and external requirements. You will have five direct reports including the group leader for Finance.

You will be responsible for all aspects of the operations in the division to ensure efficiency and performance in accordance with regulations, policies, objectives, strategy and business plans. You will make recommendations and suggestions to the Executive Board (EB), concerning the overall financial strategy at ESS, and enable EB to understand financial consequences of developments and decisions. Furthermore, you will support with data, analyses, reports and presentations of complex financial issues, for internal and external stakeholders, tailored to the respective audiences. It is important that you have the ability to establish and maintain relationships with financial institutions and contributors, and also lead and develop the engagement of the external auditors to ensure transparency to stakeholders. Managing ESS funds - both cash and In-kind financial transactions - in accordance with regulations, and owning the financial module of the ERP system, is also part of the role.

Further tasks include:

• Budget planning, forecasting and monitoring.
• Facilitating and supporting the use of budget and cost analysis tools.
• Implementing appropriate systems and internal controls to adequately safeguard financial resources.
• Owning and fine-tuning the finance and business controlling processes.
• Payment of taxes, salaries, processing and payment of approved invoices/travel claims/healthcare benefits, etc.

This is an exciting and challenging role in a continuously changing organisation, where focus is on both strategic and operational work, always with quality, efficiency and best financial practices in mind.

About you:

As our successful candidate you have a university degree in finance, economics, accounting or similar relevant degree.

You have solid experience from a similar role, for example in business controlling or finance management. You are very confident in your knowledge in areas such as accounting, financial solutions, management reporting, financial controlling, planning and analysis, and you can be persuasive when the situation calls for it.

You have previously worked in a project driven and international organisation, preferably in a research environment. You also have formal experience from successfully leading and developing teams, and enjoy collaborating and communicating with people on all levels within an organisation, as well as externally.

Fluency in verbal and written English is a prerequisite, knowledge of Swedish is an advantage. You are also an avid user of Excel and Powerpoint.

And of course, it goes without saying you love crunching the numbers!
