The arena
The Bioscience Lung Regeneration department is a critical unit within the IMED RIA, where novel ideas for drugs are to be discovered and developed in a strong cross-functional environment to meet the unmet medical need for patients with loss of structural integrity and tissue of the lung and were we ultimately are aiming for lung recovery.
Job description
The Head of Bioscience Lung Regeneration is a principal role in the IMED RIA, where the role holder has a direct impact on R&D Discovery output through effective partnerships and collaborations with internal and external stakeholders. The role holder will have a major impact on strategic development of the IMED RIA, ensuring that the portfolio is delivered today and that IMED RIA science and capabilities are fit for future challenges and opportunities.
The successful candidate is an internationally recognised scientist with a proven track record of innovation and milestone delivery in several drug discovery projects or to have provided scientific leadership through academic excellence in the area of Lung Regeneration and/or Repair. In addition, excellent communication skills and an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with an entrepreneurial attitude and delivery focus.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the IMED RIA Bioscience Lung Regeneration department as a role-model leadership figure
To drive the development and progression of a portfolio of IMED pre-clinical and early clinical opportunities which will support the IMED RIA in achieving its business objectives and the delivery of the IMED RIA strategy
To achieve scientific excellence at all levels ensuring highest quality research is carried out
To raise the visibility and profile of RIA Bioscience within and outside AZ
Build and maintain a network to key leading research institutions
Contributions as member of the IMED RIA LTSupport development of winning disease area strategies for the IMED, driving portfolio value, in coordination with respective biologics IMED.
Share responsibility for IMED biology area strategy, and the delivery of sufficient positive POP/POC, demonstrating therapeutic relevance, with high probability of successful market access and delivery of valuable new medicines.
Contribute to the content of the agreed business plan and execute against it
Ensure agile response of IMED business plan to significant changes in the external and competitive environment
Key Deliverables
Drive and coordinate the identification and delivery of the best project opportunities regardless of source
Achieve scientific leadership in the areas of Lung Regeneration and early development for RIA
Build and maintain bioscience capabilities and ensure the most critical experiments are carried out
Continuously monitor the external environment to identify opportunities, threats and risks in a timely manner.
Ensure that the Bioscience position is fully integrated into the IMED strategy and portfolio reviews.
Contribute with knowledge and expertise in the activities required to deliver the Biology Area Strategies and Business Plan for the IMED.

Collaborate closely with colleagues in Global Medicine Development (GMD) and Global Product and Portfolio Strategy (GPPS) to align priorities and secure project deliveries.
Collaborate strongly with other IMED Bioscience leads (within and outside IMED RIA) to identify and exploit intra and cross-IMED opportunities and embed best practice.
Collaborate closely with peers within and outside the IMED, in particular Bioscience Lung Immunity, Bioscience Lung Epithelium, Early Clinical Development, DMPK, Chemistry, Discovery Sciences
Talent Management & Development
Recruit, retain and develop leading scientists to build a world class team.
Provide high quality feedback and coaching to direct reports (direct and deployed) and mentor key talent in the organization
Education:
PhD or MD and post-doc experience preferable in the lung regeneration Biology/Medicine
