hela Sverige The Director's Services at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a "Head of Communications".
Description of position/department
ESS's mission is to design, construct and operate a world-leading neutron facility for materials research. The ESS communications department consists of a team of three Communications Officers that currently report directly to the CEO.
The operative task of the communications department is to serve internal communication needs and work with external communications/PR towards various target groups within science, politics, industry and the general public, with a European focus.
Our in-house competence covers journalism, press & media, PR and presentations, project management, production within print & digital media, film & web production, strategic communication and branding.
The strategic challenge of the communications department is to develop and maintain an effective programme of Integrated Communication coordinating all communication tools, channels, functions and sources within the ESS organisation in order to make ESS's targeted communication effective and interface efficienty with external actors in the development of an internationally attractive region for science and innovation.
Description of main responsibilities
The Head of Communications will be responsible for:
• Management responsibility for 3 communication officers
• Press and PR and publicity material
• Political liaison
• Internal Information
• The ESS Intranet
• The ESS Webpage
• The ESS Exhibition
• The information site for the Steering Committee and the Board
• Graphic Profile
• Representation at European, National and Regional meetings
• Giving presentations about ESS
• Crisis communication
• Pro-actively extending the profile of ESS beyond the boundaries of Scandinavia into Europe and addressing the Scientific community. Qualifications
We believe that the right person for this position has:
• Good staff management qualities with a solid psychological insight
• A good knowledge of European science politics and policies
• An ease in communicating at all levels, including Government ministers
• A knowledge of European and global large scale facilities and their complex needs with respect to communication
• Furthermore it is essential that the candidate has a capacity to think outside the box, a creative mind set and the ability to take on a wider more modern way of creating strong links with a European outlook.
• A university education
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
• A sympathy with scientific topics is an advantage.What ESS can offer

The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period.
