AstraZeneca is recruiting a Head of Biomarker Discovery and Development to the Translational Science function within the Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapeutic area at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg, Sweden.
CVRM Innovative Medicines (IMED) within AstraZeneca is accountable for the discovery and the development (up to phase II) of new drugs in the CVRM arena within three main strategic areas - cardiovascular/heart failure, metabolism (diabetes and NASH) and chronic kidney diseases. Translational Sciences (TS) Department in IMED CVRM has the remit to bridge early and late drug development by providing early target validation in human and by generating hypothesis for precision medicine approaches through biomarker science
As Head of Biomarker Discovery and Development within CVRM you will lead a biomarker team of scientists to drive novel biomarker discovery, development and implementation in clinic for decision making across the whole portfolio and all the CVRM disease areas. You will be responsible for the delivery of biomarkers to support clinical trial design, target engagement, proof of mechanism and proof of principle as well as exploratory assessments in human. You will also be accountable for CVRM Biomarker strategy internally and externally. The role holder will be a core member of the TS leadership team and will act as deputy of the Department Head as needed.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide strategic leadership for the Biomarker Discovery and Development group.
* Responsible for strategy for delivery of decision making biomarkers (DMBM) to clinical trials across CVRM portfolio based on disease area requirements, clinical line of sight, long-term view of project demand and the evolving external regulatory and healthcare environment
* Responsible for compliance with Good Clinical Practice requirements and AstraZeneca Policies and Standards.
* Performance management and people development within the team enabling high team performance, strategic growth and impact at portfolio level as well as internal/external visibility of the team
* Demonstrate expertise in own area as well as understanding of therapy area biology. Significantly contribute to the delivery of projects with experimental, technical and theoretical knowledge of biomarkers discovery and bioanalysis, data interpretation and planning of follow-up studies
* Work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure biomarker data integration in projects
* Contribute to create a vibrant and entrepreneurial organization focused on innovation and continuous learning while collaborating closely with other teams to drive cross boundary collaboration and remove barriers
* Source, lead and manage external collaborations and partners as well as ensuring access to the best external scientific collaborations and resources
Essential Requirements
We are looking for a leader of the biomarker group, with strong experience in biomarker discovery and development and track record of deliveries in clinical programs, experience with GCP regulations and strong strategic line of sight enabling biomarker capabilities growth and competitiveness.
* Bachelor of Science/Master of Science/Ph.D. in a relevant discipline
* Strong leadership and people management skills with a track record of mentoring the work of others.
* At least 10 years' experience in biomarker development acquired in e.g. Pharmaceutical, CRO or Diagnostic company, with track record of delivery of clinical biomarkers, publications, patents and external recognition
* Experience in leading scientific organizations and driving cutting edge science
* Consolidated experience in working in GCP environment with track record of deliveries in clinical projects. Experience with laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures, laboratory accreditation requirements and ability to interpret and action internal and external quality assurance results
* Experience in regulatory/ethical submission and in representing company externally in interactions with regulatory authorities (FDA, EMA)
* Excellent business acumen and strategic thinking with proven track record of ability to influence Senior Leaders for topics related to Biomarker strategy, investments and organization
* Strong communication skills and ability to influence across boundaries and cultures
* Excellent presentation skills and a track record of peer reviewed publications
* Excellent interpersonal skills that influence and shape the image of the organization internally
