hela Sverige The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a "Group Leader - Sample Environment".
Description of position/department
The Sample Environment group will be part of the Instrument Support Division under the Science Directorate. The Instrument Support Division provides the technological tools required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at ESS. The groups in the Instrument Support Division will undertake development work to ensure that the instruments are equipped to perform world-leading science, in close dialogue with the instrument scientists.
Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will establish and lead the Sample Environment group at ESS. The Sample Environment group will be responsible for the design, acquisition and commissioning of different kinds of devices and components providing not only high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressure but also an environment that will be unique for soft-matter experiments using fast neutron instruments. The immediate focus will be on liaising with external groups and in-kind contributors, as well as the instruments scientists at ESS in Lund, to define specific sample environment systems.
Qualifications
Academic qualification:
• Masters degree in physics or one of the natural sciences. Essential experience:
• PhD in physics or one of the natural sciences.
• A minimum of 5 years experience in using/designing sample environment systems, preferably in relation to neutron scattering instruments.
• Motivational leadership skills
• Experience of working in an international environment.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage. Desirable experience:
• Management of a team of scientists, engineers and technicians; project management, including budgeting and reporting. What ESS can offer

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world's most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials - from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
