We now offer an exciting opportunity for a Group Director at Late CVRM with passion, expertise and experience in developing, coaching and mentoring a team of fantastic physicians and scientists.

The role is based at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden where you will be part of a stimulating and collaborative environment where scientific questions are addressed in an innovative and sustainable way.

Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) is one of AstraZeneca 's core therapy areas. Together we push the boundaries of science to turn ideas into life changing medicines for patients suffering from Heart Failure, Diabetes or Chronic Kidney Disease.



What you'll do

The Group Director is responsible for line managing physicians and scientists, including performance management and professional development activities. You will be reporting directly to a Vice President within Late CVRM and you will have 8-10 physicians and scientists directly reporting to you. In the role as Group Director you will be responsible for maximizing efficient utilization of your team to deliver the functional objectives, including delivery of specific clinical development studies and regulatory submission documents, and rapid implementation of leading-edge development methods.

In the role, you will partake in project activities on an ongoing basis, e.g. in a Global Clinical Program Lead, Research Physician or Scientist role. Additional activities will be participating in cross functional improvement, change and innovation projects. As a Group Director, you will provide strategic and operational leadership to assigned physicians and scientists. You will also ensure consistent practices, compliance with internal SOPs, local regulations and laws as well as to lead the talent development, including on-the-job training, best practice sharing, leadership development and participation in mentoring and coaching programs.



Major Responsibilities

* Line management responsibility for physicians and scientists, including delivering the performance management and guiding the professional development of direct reports
* Recruitment and retention of internal and external talent to support capabilities
* Develop, coach, mentor, retain, motivate and inspire individuals in their group
* Efficiently utilize resources and capabilities within their group to deliver functional goals
* Manage the approval of travel, purchase of minor equipment/software, and other routine administration matters for direct reports
* Have direct engagement in clinical activities. These could include but are not limited to: direct project support, licensing evaluations, external relationship activities, disease strategy development, etc
* Contribute to improvement initiatives and work to establish good global relations and drive the development of systems, skills & processes in conformance to global standards
* Communicate business priorities and vision
* Work closely with key partners to effectively champion project objectives and resource requirements
* Ensure high SHE standards and meet its legal obligations to Internal and External Contacts/Customers
* Strong worldwide external awareness, good scientific and external decision-maker-networks
* Credible in scientific and commercial environments



Essential for the role

* Medical degree
* Experience in line management and/or directing a team
* Working knowledge of performance management, budget management and employment legislation
* Broad clinical and research background and a comprehensive understanding of the medical aspects of drug development, particularly in specialist area for the role and specific understanding of late phase drug development
* Generally, at least 5 years of pharmaceutical company experience is required although in exceptional cases, other relevant experience may be substituted
* Fluent in English

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are also essential in this role.
