The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for an FPGA Engineer at the Integrated Control Systems (ICS) Division.

Are you an applied physicist or engineer, with experience in machine protection or interlock systems looking to take on a new challenge? Join the ESS's Protection Systems group and collaborate with many different specialists to master the challenges of protecting a novel neutron source driven by a 5MW proton beam.

Description of directorate/division?

As an applied physicist or engineer you will be part of ESS's Machine Directorate, which is responsible to deliver the accelerator and the target station. You will join the Integrated Control Systems (ICS) division, responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including the accelerator, target station, neutron scattering instruments and conventional facilities. In particular you will join the Protection Systems Group whose mandate covers the design, realization, operation and consolidation of the Machine Protection and Personnel Safety Systems.

Description of main responsibilities?

The ESS accelerator, a pulsed superconducting linac, being built in Lund, will produce a proton beam of 5MW average power, driving the world's brightest neutron source. The successful applicant will be working on the design and development of interlock systems relevant for machine protection.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience in working with hardware for electronics and digital electronics.
• Knowledge in uTCA systems would be an asset.
• Experience in working with modern FPGAs (usage of Xilinx IP cores, Microblaze, etc.).
• Experience in working with analog electronics, signal standards such as LVDS, RS485, TTL and communication standards such as SPI, I2C, UART.
• Being familiar with optical components such as SFP, fibers would be an asset.
• Good programming knowledge (c, c++). Knowledge in Python would be an asset.
• Being familiar with different Operating Systems and software. Linux knowledge would be an asset.

Role

• Work with uTCA standard and FPGA-based boards.
• Participate with in-kind partner from ZHAW in firmware development (VHDL) to implement logic for the Fast Beam Interlock System (FBIS) in Xilinx modern FPGA.
• Find technical solutions (hardware and firmware) to interface with other systems (Sensor systems, Actuators, Beam instrumentation, etc.)
• Understand the overall functioning of the ESS Linac, later the Target and Neutron experimental lines. Participate in system design reviews and internal Use Case workshops.
• Realize tests in the lab to verify the functioning of the Fast Beam Interlock System (FBIS) gradually.
• Deploy / install FBIS hardware in the machine and participate in the validation of the system.
• Work daily with Office tools to write Word documents and prepare presentations, assist to meetings and use daily administrative tools to organize work (Jira, Confluence).
• Get used to work in multidisciplinary and parallel work environment.

In addition:

• Help integrating the FBIS into the Software environment (EPICS).
• Help designing the Protection System for the Raster Magnets.

Personal Profile

• Being able to work in a team.
• Experience of working in an international environment is desirable.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite.
• Knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.



Duration & Location?

The position is limited to 3 years with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
