SMHI is an expert authority with a global outlook and a vital mission to forecast changes in weather, water and climate. With a scientific foundation, we use knowledge, research and services to contribute to a more sustainable society. Every hour of every day, all year round.

Rossby Centre is SMHIs unit for climate modelling which pursues research on climate processes and the behaviour of the climate system. Our main tools are the global and regional climate models developed within the research unit. Work is conducted both on model development and evaluation, as well as for process studies and climate change research in support societal decisions and impact, adaptation and mitigation studies.

About the job

The position is primarily focused on development and validation of high-resolution regional climate models with focus on atmospheric physics and/or coupling between the atmosphere and land and ocean surfaces. An important part of the work involves development of numerical algorithms and model codes, which includes addressing issues identified from model validation and incorporating new physical parametrizations. Application of the high-resolution regional climate models for climatological studies of today's and future climate may become part of work tasks.

The work will take place within the Rossby Centre at the Research Department of SMHI and will involve close collaboration with other model development scientists in the Rossby Centre and in the Numerical Weather Prediction section of SMHI. The work will also be performed in collaboration with a number of other climate groups in Europe working on the same model system.

About you

We primarily seek a person with a completed PhD in meteorology or a similar discipline with strong background in scientific programming. Alternatively, a person with a formal background in programming, and strong interest and knowledge in atmospheric physics and/or coupling between the atmosphere and other components in the earth system will be considered for the position. It is highly beneficial if you have experience from some area(s) including parameterisation of clouds and radiation, interaction between microphysical and dynamical processes at the mesoscale, processes in the planetary boundary layer and exchange processes at the land surface. Post-doc experience is also beneficial. You are used to working in a Unix/Linux environment and have good programming skills. Experience from Fortran, Python, CDO, PERL, C++ or similar packages is very important as is work on software development (git/github). Experience from working in an HPC environment is a requirement. It is beneficial if you have experience of working with climate models and their infrastructure.

We seek a person who is willing to work in a team on common larger tasks, and at the same time can work independently on complex problems. Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required. If the candidate does not speak Swedish a clear willingness to learn it is required.

The position is permanent and will be located at SMHI in Norrköping, Sweden
