The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 47 500 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The atmospheric science group carries out research activities ranging from fundamental studies of chemical reactions on the molecular level, to field studies of atmospheric processes and their importance to climate, air quality and sustainable development. The atmosphere is a complex mixture of interacting gases, aerosol and cloud particles. Phenomena at the gas-particle interface are receiving increased attention because of their importance for the behavior of the atmosphere. Interface processes alter the chemical composition of the atmosphere. They also impact the formation and growth of aerosol and cloud particles, and consequently affect the energy budget and dynamics of the atmosphere. Here, we focus on the detailed description of these interface processes, and in particular the behavior of water and organic material. The overall aim is to develop a molecular-level understanding of key processes in the atmosphere. A specific goal is to characterize trace gas interactions with condensed organic phases that serve as proxies for the organic aerosols found in the atmosphere. Our approach to achieve these goals is to perform large scale molecular dynamics simulations. The project is closely linked to ongoing experimental studies using the environmental molecular beam method, and together the studies provides unique information about the dynamics and kinetics on organic surfaces.

Job assignments
The research activities involve the use of large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to describe surface processes of relevance to atmospheric organic aerosol. The theoretical studies will be carried out in close connect to ongoing experimental work within the research group, with emphasis on environmental molecular beam experiments. In addition to work in Sweden the applicant is expected to participate in our international collaboration projects, and to present results from the project in scientific publications and at international conferences.

Qualifications
A completed Swedish doctoral degree in natural science or a foreign degree corresponding to a Swedish doctoral degree. Demonstrated experience in molecular dynamics simulations of surface processes on organic aerosol. Previous experience in using molecular dynamic simulations to describe and interpret results obtained in environmental molecular beam experiments with water and organic compounds.

Employment
Fixed term during a year, full time, 100 % at the Department of Chemistry and molecularbiology
