All this is made possible thanks to our globally distributed network of 30,000+ Raspberry Pi-based radio receivers that feed real-time aircraft data into the Flightradar24 platform. Over a billion database entries are added each month and we are processing several years of historical data, totalling many terabytes. Our proprietary flight tracking data is industry leading and even investigative government agencies from around the world rely on it for aviation accident investigations.
We are looking for a highly driven CTO with a business mindset to help us build an effective and robust development platform that allows for rapid product and team member growth in a distributed team setting. You'll lead an engineering organization with 33 developers across five teams - Backend (C++), Web, Infrastructure, Android and iOS - in a dozen countries.
The position requires that you are able to work in Stockholm, Sweden.
What you'll do
Coach and mentor five Engineering Managers
Build an effective and dynamic engineering team structure with suitable processes for efficient collaboration between developers and between teams
Create the right environment for developers to be enthusiastic, driven, creative and productive
Work closely with the Product Owner team to support the prioritization and alignment of development across the organization
In collaboration with Engineering Managers identify staffing needs and recruit outstanding technical talent
Provide tech vision and strategy
Own the occasional cross-functional project
Be part of the management team and report to the CEO
Who you are
Passionate about building and guiding teams
Proven track record of leading and growing a large development organization, ideally including both front and back-end developers, remote/distributed teams, and practicing agile and lean principles in a product organization
Plenty of hands-on experience recruiting developers
Experience with web application and system architecture as well as on-prem and cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS)
Business mindset and used to having budget responsibility and negotiating with vendors
Strong communicator (in English, Swedish is not a requirement for this role), both within the organization and with external stakeholders
Able to work in Stockholm, Sweden
Bonus points if you have experience developing, documenting, and/or managing public API
Bonus points if you have B2B experience managing large-scale services with SLAs in place
