Main responsibilities
Financial Management
• Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting.
• Implement a robust contracts management and financial management reporting system.
• Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the board of directors; assess any changes necessary.
• Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the ED; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization's financial status.
• Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting
• Ensure that the billing and payment schedules are adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.
• Build the capacity of field-based Finance Managers and other finance staff as needed in Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Khartoum and Bukavu.
• Update and implement all necessary policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department's overall policy and procedure manual.
• Accountable to develop financial policies and procedures consistent with moral and ethical organizational principles, in line with LPI guidelines and in consultation woth SMT, in order to ensure responsible and contribute to the effective use of public donations.
• Accountable to develop program to ensure adequate financial systems and controls are in place and the financial procedures and policies are being followed.
• Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the board of directors.

Human Resources and Administration
• Further develop LPI's human resources and administration, enhancing professional development, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation and recruiting.
• Ensure that recruiting processes are consistent and streamlined across the organization.
• Work closely and transparently with all external partners including third-party vendors and consultants.
• Oversee administrative functions as well as facilities to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales.

Relations within the organisation
• The DFA will be under the supervision of the Executive Director of LPI
• The DFA has supervisory responsibility for the Finance and HR Officers
• S/he will also work in close cooperation with the Programme Director, Communications Director as well as other staff in Head Office and Resident Representatives and Finance Managers on field level.

Qualifications
• Minimum of a B.A. in business or personnel administration, ideally with an MBA/CPA or related degree
• At least 7-10 years of overall professional experience; ideally 6+ years of broad financial and operations management experience
• Experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination
• Experience from NGO and development cooperation work, preferably with field experience
• Ability to translate financial concepts to - and to effectively collaborate with - programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds
• A track record in grants management
• Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; knowledge of accounting and reporting software
• A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making
• Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholder
• A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of LPI.
• Language skills: proficiency in Swedish and English, French knowledge is a merit.

The position will require frequent field travel to LPI offices.

Life & Peace Institute
The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international and ecumenical centre that supports and promotes non-violent approaches to conflict transformation through a combination of research and action that entail the strengthening of existing local capacities and enhancing preconditions for building peace. The head office based in Uppsala, Sweden, supervises programmes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Sudan, as well as a regional programme at the Horn of Africa.
