The unit for forest field research at SLU is looking for field staff for an exciting season where new field trials and experiments are established and ongoing trials are measured or followed up. We will primarily work in northern Sweden and both forestry companies and individual landowners are our landlords. The experiments deal with mixed forests, stratified forests, continuity forests, carbon storage in the soil, water and nutrients as growth-regulating factors, new rejuvenation methods, fertilization of forests of different ages to take a few examples. Experienced researchers, enthusiastic postdocs, and doctoral students lead the work. This is an opportunity for you who want to work with questions related to forests and forest management in change and at the same time a great opportunity to get to know the world of exciting research. The best way to predict the future is to be involved and create it.
Tasks:
The tasks mainly consist of setting up new field trials, measuring and treating ongoing field trials. The data collection may refer to survival and growth of plants and trees, but also include vegetation inventories and soil sampling. The experiments span a number of different forestry issues. In addition to sampling, some of the experiments also involve certain sample preparation and analysis. Some of the experiments are of a more experimental nature and then include installing measuring equipment and performing various types of treatments (fertilization, labelling with isotopes, etc.).
Qualifications:
We are looking for motivated and enthusiastic people with a degree in biology, ecology, forest science, plant biology or with experience of work tasks within these areas. You should be interested in both forest management issues for practical use and the forest ecosystem from a scientific perspective. You must be able to work independently and in groups, both in the field and with data analysis. Experiences of data processing and statistics as well as of practical fieldwork are meritorious. Some projects involve work and living in another place and you need to be able to be away from home during e.g. a whole working week. Driving license for car (B) is also a qualification. Personal qualities are highly valued. Applicants are expected to attach a CV and a personal letter on a maximum of one A4 page.
