We are now recruiting an experienced Veterinary / Veterinär to lead a team of scientists and technicians within the Laboratory Animal Science (LAS) function at AstraZeneca's vibrant R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.

LAS is a global function within Innovative Medicines and Early Development (IMED), AstraZeneca's biotech unit that deliver candidate drugs into late-stage clinical development. The vision for LAS is to apply expertise in animal science to advance research innovation and quality, animal welfare and compliance. We do this through an organization of world class LAS specialists who provide valued and innovative capabilities to enable innovative research through effective and efficient partnerships with AstraZeneca's therapy areas. An important mission for LAS is promoting animal ethics, welfare, and the 3Rs (replace, reduce and refine), linking quality science and animal welfare together.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As an Laboratory Animal Veterinary you will lead a team of approximately eight scientists and technichians, focussing on partnering and collaboration with research groups within different therapy areas, but with focus on the Chronic Kidney Disease and Heart Failure areas, to support development and refine animal models and methods. You will be expected to:

* Have an expert knowledge of and keep up to date with developments in, laboratory animal science and the ethical concepts involved, in order to help promote the raising of health, welfare and scientific standards.
* Mange staff directly as a team leader including contributing to the motivation and development of others, overseeing the quality of the work in progress and contributing to the effective operation of the team
* Contribute to the identification of training needs and skills requirements in research, veterinarian, and animal care functions, and will contribute to the development and delivery of such training.
* Interact with key stakeholders to understand future strategy in respect to science area of laboratory animal science and advise on best practices to support the strategy
* Participate in meetings, committees or external groups to act as advisor on animal related issues
* Actively seek opportunities for external collaborations in animal model development and/or 3Rs initiatives
* Potential to fulfil a regulatory requirement such as Designated Veterinary or Attending Veterinary.
* Potential to serve on an ethical review committee (Djurskyddsorgan)
* Have good knowledge and understanding of any relevant international legislation
* Provide out of hours veterinary coverage or be part of a rotation to provide adequate veterinarian coverage.

Requirements

* University degree as Veterinary, registered Veterinary in Sweden
* Knowledge of animal models in use across the business and preferentially more detailed knowledge in the Chronic Kidney Disease and Heart Failure areas
* In depth understanding of how in vivo research methods support other methods in the drug development process.
* Ability to critically evaluate animal models and research needs, driving development of new methods and refinement of existing methods.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills
* Excellent English and Swedish (or Danish or Norwegian) are required, both verbal and in writing
