As a leading global organisation for human rights, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute has worked for nearly forty years to uphold and promote human rights principles through research, education, and support. Our team of experts works to empower individuals, institutions and organisations and thus make a tangible impact on human rights challenges. If you are driven, like us, to work for positive change, this may be the right place for you.

Executive Director for the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law
After years of dedicated leadership, Morten Kjaerum has announced his retirement. Morten has played a pivotal role in driving growth, innovation, and success during his tenure, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
Therefore, we are now looking for a new experienced leader with a deep commitment to human rights and visions for our road ahead.

About RWI
Through its extensive research, education, and support programmes, RWI strives to advance the understanding and implementation of human rights law. The institute conducts comprehensive studies and produces high level research to address contemporary human rights challenges. It collaborates with governments, NGOs, academia, and other stakeholders to develop practical solutions and policies that uphold human rights standards. By engaging in dialogue and fostering cooperation, RWI facilitates the exchange of knowledge and good practices among human rights practitioners, scholars, and policymakers.

We are about 60 employees at six offices in Harare, Jakarta, Lund, Nairobi, Phnom Penh, and Yerevan. We work with organizations at the local, national, regional, and international levels, from cities to the EU and the UN. In particular, we have close ties with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and Lund University.

Being the Executive Director
We offer a position in a dynamic international human rights organization in a sector undergoing constant change.

In this role, you will collaborate with a talented and dedicated team of professionals, working together to address the most pressing human rights issues of our time. You will have the opportunity to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including academics, officials in governments, EU and the UN as well as various businesses, NGOs, and other organisations working within the human rights field.

As the Executive Director, you are responsible for managing our organisation in a clear, professional, and trustworthy manner, as well as contributing with strategic leadership and direction to the institute to achieve its mission and vision. With the support of the management team and office directors in the various countries, you are part of developing the various areas of work in research, education, and support. With the outset in the four thematic areas:

access to justice

business and human rights

human rights and the environment

non-discrimination and inclusion

You will ensure that the organization is optimally positioned to implement our long-term strategic plan by managing and monitoring the institute's personnel, budget, and operations.

You explore various revenue streams, including grants, individual donations, and corporate sponsorships, to help secure funding for RWI.

As the Executive Director, you have a four-year full-time contract with the possibility of renewal for one more period. The position is based in our RWI office in Lund, Sweden, and requires travelling as you will represent RWI at the national and international level in meetings, conferences, and events.

You report to the Head of the board and ultimately to the Board of Trustees.

Your profile
You have a proven track record of successful leadership in the human rights field and are a strategic thinker with a clear vision for advancing human rights in today's complex and changing world.

You have led an internationally set up organisation and possess the ability to effectively combine an expertise-driven business approach with practical considerations related to financial matters and economic realities. You have the ability to work through others and can easily engage leaders and employees towards set goals and visions.

You are fluent in both written and spoken English, and knowledge of other languages is an advantage. As a person, you are humble and committed.

We are looking for someone with a deep understanding of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. If you have a strong commitment to make a positive impact on the world, we want to hear from you.
