Join our international non-profit research organization and help create a sustainable future for all.

We are looking for our next Executive Director who will continue to develop our mission, to support decision-making and induce change toward sustainable development around the world by providing integrative knowledge that bridges science and policy in the field of environment and development.

We invite applications from candidates with a proven track record of successful leadership of international organizations and extensive experience of working with governmental and non-governmental institutions at the interface of research and policy. You will have a reputation among your peers for ensuring that research and knowledge is put into practice by decision makers, in public and private sectors, and at local and global levels. You will have a broad understanding and engagement in the challenges of sustainable development and in leading an international organization with a focus on research.

We believe that you already have experience and understanding of how to lead an organization driven by scientific excellence, and have deep knowledge of how to influence policy through engagement, by maintaining and developing external contacts and networks with relevant stakeholders and funders.

You have a proven international track record as an executive manager, who drives the intellectual and strategic direction of the whole organization. You have the ability and passion, developed from at least five to seven years of executive management, to operate in knowledge-based organizations.

We would expect you to have knowledge and understanding of the Swedish government and administration, and strong networks among Swedish stakeholders, from government departments to agencies, research councils to key industries. It is desirable that you have an excellent international network and relationships spanning intergovernmental organizations to academia.

We expect you to continue to develop our strategy and organization. Your ability to create stimulating and international cooperation, in combination with excellent interpersonal leadership skills, will be a decisive factor in selecting our candidate.

Our next Executive Director will also need to be an experienced communicator - at ease briefing at Ministerial level, confident with the media and able to capture the attention of large audiences - in order to bridge science and policy.

This is a full-time position located at SEI Headquarters in Stockholm. However, this is a global leadership role and you will work with the whole, global SEI organization. Therefore, you will need to have a willingness to travel. The appointment is for four years, with the option of extension for a further four years by mutual agreement with the SEI board.
