We are currently seeking a creative and highly motivated scientist to join our energy storage team within Alternative Drivetrains Group. The purpose with this position is to plan, direct, and execute electrical energy storage research & development assignments that support implementation of the technology in Volvo hybrid initiative. The individual will possess a good working knowledge of energy storage devices, the chemical and physical properties of components, and an aptitude for solving assigned problem. Candidate will also possess competence in experimental methods, related to energy storage system performance and materials, and interpretation of results using design of experiments. The function may include supervision of engineers and scientists in applied research and development.
Alternative Drivetrains Group closely follows the front line technology and research in hybrid electric powertrain, electric energy storage, and electric drive, fuel cell and fuel cell systems. In the field of hybrid electric vehicles, the areas of competence are electric motor drives, traction batteries, hybrid powertrain control, and electric control architecture. Vehicle simulation activities focus on design and control of hybrid electric vehicle. In our traction battery laboratory we conduct life cycle tests as well as functionality tests of batteries, from battery cell level to complete battery systems. The fuel cell team develops deep knowledge in fuel cell stacks mainly for auxiliary power systems. We perform testing both on the cell and stack level for fuel cells. The group runs and participates in a wide range of projects with short-term as well as long-term goals. For example, design and implementation of prototypes and products, feasibility studies, concept vehicles etc.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct research within field energy storage systems. The focus of our group has been mainly on batteries and super-capacitors
• Identify key technical issues and focus resources to propose cutting edge solutions for implementation of energy storage devices in hybrid electric vehicles
• Implement, refine, and customize diagnostic and analytical methods for characterization of energy storage systems
• Collect and analyze data, document and present findings
• Lead projects and initiatives with broad scope and high impact to the business
• Contribute to creation of roadmaps and manage corresponding development projects
Educational Background:
PhD in Electrochemical or Chemical Engineering or M Sc. with minimum 5 years experience within the battery field.
Previous Work Experience:
Experience in combining experimentation and theory/analysis in electric energy storage technology.
Required Skills and Abilities:
• Theoretical understanding of electrochemical systems
• Experienced in the analysis and design of battery components and systems
• Strong engineering & scientific judgment and practical approach to technology
• In-depth-experience in the development of methods and systems related to the investigation and development of energy storage technologies
• Experience in test planning, laboratory experimentation, and data analysis
• Effective personal communication skills, both verbal and written
