Our goal is to become the brightest source of neutrons for science and technology and be operational by the end of this decade. A state-of-the-art suite of neutron scattering instruments will be made available to address a wide range of scientific fields in fundamental and materials science. Powered by the world's most advanced linear proton accelerator, ESS will enable cutting-edge research in materials science, energy, health, and the environment for decades to come.
Join us in shaping the future of science - from the ground up.
About this role
As we continue our transition into Steady State Operations, ESS is now looking for a motivated and experienced Group Leader to head our Electrical Systems and Maintenance Services group. In this key role within the Operations Division, you will oversee the operation, maintenance, and compliance of ESS's electrical distribution systems, including low and high voltage networks.
As a group leader, you will be assigned ESS electrical leader and electrical operations leader roles. You will also be part of defining plans for a long-term electrical compliance at ESS. Additionally, you will be responsible for preparing and executing long term plan to grow the group to provide electrical maintenance central services to the rest of the ESS organisation.
This hands-on technical and people leadership role requires a certified and experienced electrician with a deep knowledge of electrical systems, ideally including high voltage expertise. You will be instrumental in leading ESS's electrical operations efforts while planning and implementing strategic initiatives such as compliance frameworks and the further development of on-call support systems.
Day-to-day, you will:
• Manage a diverse team of professionals to provide electrical maintenance services to the ESS organisation as well.
• Ensure electrical systems are reliable and compliant, providing uninterrupted services to the demanding technical and scientific operations of ESS.
• Ensure the operational readiness and maintenance of ESS's electrical distribution systems (low, medium and high voltage) according to required specifications and safety standards.
• Ensure sufficient and proficient electrical maintenance services for the rest of the organisation.
• Organise and lead the work of the group members, acting as the line manager for your team. This includes setting goals, leading performance evaluations, managing training programs, and hiring as needed to grow group capacity.
• Act as ESS's electrical lead and electrical operations leader, taking ownership of development and oversight for procedures for working with electrical systems.
• Develop and execute a plan to ensure ESS meets all relevant electrical compliance requirements over time.
• Provide maintenance services to technical teams across the Machine and Science Directorates ..
• Manage external contracts for maintenance technician services and additional capacity to support ESS teams.
• Organise maintenance tasks performed by both group members and contractors, coordinating with the central work coordination and planning team and Control Room Operations teams to prioritize and execute activities efficiently.
• Improve and develop the on-call setup for the group by cross-training team members.
• Ensure the right competencies are in place to support safe and efficient operations.
• Organise and drive system ownership hand over from project deliveries to operational systems.
• Keep maintenance contracts up to date as required.
About you
For this role, we need a suitably qualified and experienced person. Ideally, you are an experienced, certified electrician with a passion for people leadership and a strong desire to build a collaborative team environment. You bring expertise in electrical systems and maintenance services, with a solid understanding of both low and high voltage distribution systems. Prior, demonstrable experience of leading operations, managing compliance, and ensuring system reliability would make you an ideal candidate for this role.
As a skilled problem-solver, you are someone who excels at managing day-to-day operations while planning strategically for the future. With experience in managing teams, handling contracts, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders, you must be able to effectively balance immediate priorities with long-term goals. Your technical insight and leadership ability inspire those around you to deliver their best work in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment.
As an Electrical Group Leader, you will have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in ensuring that one of the world's foremost research facilities operates at the highest standards across its electrical systems. Strong interpersonal and communication skills define your approach to building highly functional teams as they allow you to interact effectively with technical systems teams and management stakeholders. You therefore need to have the organisational mindset needed to contribute to - or develop - structured workflows and documentation to optimise operational processes.
The working language of ESS is English, but the ability to speak another European language would be an advantage.
