The Swedish Academy of Realist Art (SARA) is seeking an instructor to start work this fall (August 24, 2015).

SARA was founded in 2006 as Sweden's first school of fine art dedicated to traditional, realistic drawing and painting. The education is a three-year program with a curriculum designed as a systematic progression that breaks down the complex and intimidating challenge of learning to draw and paint realistically from life into practical stages. Students progress in a logical, step-by-step fashion leading ultimately to free and confident painting in oil. SARA uses the traditional comparative method of measurement in its training - it does not use the sight-size method. The language of instruction is English.

SARA is very proud of its faculty. We want everyone who teaches at the school to really enjoy that part of their life - to see their teaching as another aspect of their professional career. Happy working artists make the best and most enthusiastic art teachers. Therefore, our teachers are given a work schedule that allows them to earn a salary that can cover their basic living costs (rent and food), while giving them ample time to focus attention on their personal work. Typically, a teacher works about 35% of full-time. Each SARA instructor works for 2 weeks at a time, with four weeks off in between each two-week work period. They are also provided with a private studio space within the school and have access to the school's models and facilities.

Teaching at SARA gives you the freedom and time to create your work in a positive and supportive environment, so that you can become the best painter you can be and establish a solid career, all while helping eager students get theirs started. As our teacher, you are a part of the SARA family. Your personal thoughts and ideas matter and they play an active and positive role in developing and improving the way the school teaches its students.

In order to settle into SARA and its unique work environment, the instructor's initial duties will be teaching only beginning students. This would include critiquing two-dimensional master copies (copies after Charles Bargue, and other masters), charcoal cast drawing, pencil and charcoal figure drawing, as well as other subjects depending on their knowledge, strengths and interests (for example, portraiture, concept art).

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

• Academically trained: applicants must show examples of cast drawings/paintings, still life paintings, figure drawings/paintings, portrait drawings/paintings

• Have at least one year of teaching experience

• Be working as a professional painter: applicants are currently represented by a gallery, and/or have exhibited within the past year

• Have a high level of technical ability: applicants must show examples of work done outside of a school environment (created without teacher critiques/input) from life (no photo reference)

Compensation:

• A private studio within the school
• Access to the school's models and facilities
• Salary depends upon how many teaching hours are worked and any additional duties or classes delivered (i.e. portrait class, evening classes, concept art, etc.)

Applicants should also email a CV and a personal letter explaining why they wish to work at SARA to info@swedishacademyofrealistart.se . Applicants are encouraged to visit SARA personally, but we understand that may not be possible. We may request an interview via Skype.
