Establishment of the optimal use of tomosynthesis in chest radiology
Application deadline: 2012-02-09
Description of the research project
Chest tomosynthesis is a novel promising imaging technique that enables the chest to be visualized in slices, similar to computed tomography (CT), but at radiation doses, examination times and costs comparable to conventional chest radiography. That 3D image data - previously only obtained using CT - now can be obtained at the much lower radiation doses, examination times and costs associated with conventional chest radiography is expected to revolutionize chest diagnostics. Furthermore, the use of tomosynthesis instead of conventional chest radiography is expected to lead to a considerable improvement in the diagnostic information obtained from the examination, at a modest increase in radiation dose. However, these expectations have not yet been proven and there exists little evidence regarding the proper use of chest tomosynthesis in health care. The present project therefore aims at systematically evaluating and improving the clinical usefulness of chest tomosynthesis by determining which improvement in chest diagnostics can be obtained in radiology by using chest tomosynthesis instead of conventional chest radiography and by investigating specific clinical tasks for which tomosynthesis can replace CT. The project can be summarized by the following four research questions:
1. What improvement in detection of lung nodules can be obtained by using chest tomosynthesis instead of conventional chest radiography and how does the radiation dose level affect the detectability?
2. Can chest tomosynthesis be used instead of chest CT for follow-up of accidentally detected nodules, and - if so - what radiation dose level is necessary?
3. Can chest tomosynthesis be used instead of chest CT for follow-up of cystic fibrosis, and - if so - what radiation dose level is necessary?
4. What are the learning aspects associated with chest tomosynthesis?
A suitable background for the applicant is a basic training equivalent to a Masters degree in radiation physics, imaging science or medicine. Experience of conducting image quality studies and performing dosimetric calculations is positive. Communication skills and ability to work in a structured manner both independently and as part of a larger team are valuable.
