Prevalence, risk factors and co-morbidity of COPD among never smokers

Description of the research project
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common but largely un-diagnosed disease in the society. COPD is expected to be the third common cause of death worldwide by year 2020. Economically COPD is an increasing demand both for the individuals with the disease and for the society as well. In Sweden the total costs of COPD have been estimated at nine billion SEK.
The most important and at the same time a preventable risk factor for COPD is cigarette smoking. The large majority of subjects with COPD in Sweden and in Europe as well are current or ex-smokers. Nevertheless, also people who never have been smokers may develop COPD, and a Swedish population study suggest that one out of six men and one out of three women with COPD never have been smokers. This problem has recently been recognized also in other developed countries. In developing countries, where people use open fires for heating their houses and for cooking, COPD is common among never smokers.
The aims of the projects are:
• What is the prevalence of COPD among never smokers?
• What are the risk factors for COPD among never smokers?
• Is passive smoking (or environmental tobacco smoke) a risk factor for COPD?
• What co-morbid diseases contribute to chronic obstruction among never smokers?
Two large scale studies will be used for answering the research questions, the Gothenburg-West Sweden Study and the Obstructive Lung Disease in Northern Sweden (OLIN) Studies.
Desired background
A good clinical knowledge about the obstructive lung diseases and about clinical methods in respiratory and internal medicine is desired. Understanding and experience of statistics applied in epidemiologic research is an advantage. The PhD studies will geographically take place mainly in Gothenburg, but the applicant must be prepared to spend some time periods in northern Sweden, preferably in Luleå or close to Luleå, for the thesis work also within the OLIN-studies.
