The successful candidate will be enrolled as a doctoral student at University of Gothenburg, and perform his or her research in close collaboration with Volvo Car Corporation.
The department provides a strong, international, and dynamic research environment with about 70 faculty and 70 PhD students.
The group has a strong international academic and industrial network. Consequently, significant opportunities for international collaboration are possible. It is possible for the interested doctoral student to experience an extended stay at an international university as a visiting scholar.
As a doctoral student you are employed by University of Gothenburg and you will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. At least 80% of your time will devoted to research toward your doctoral degree. Thus, a maximum of 20% of your time may include teaching at the department at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.
The proposed project focuses on the new international standard ISO 26262 (Road Vehicles - Functional Safety) and methods for specifying, implementing and testing of the safety requirements in cars. As modern cars become more sophisticated software platforms where a lot of innovation takes place ? examples are infotainment or active safety systems like City Safety. In this project the candidate will contribute to the development of new software development methods in the context of large-scale software development at Volvo Cars and with the backing of strong research group at Chalmers/University of Gothenburg. The candidate is expected to show leadership skills during the doctoral education as one of the goals of the project is to tighten the collaboration between academia and industry.
The qualifications for education on a doctoral level are: degree in advanced level, at least 240 university points, of which 60 are on an advanced level, or in an other way acquired similar knowledge. Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1998:80. Industrial research collaboration experience is meritorious as one of the goals of this project to generate results that are of academic excellence as well as improve the competitive position of the Volvo Cars and the academic partners through a significant and measurable improvement of their software engineering capability.
Applicants shall have a Master's Degree or corresponding (Sv. civilingenjörsexamen) in Software Engineering or Computer Science or in a related discipline (you may apply even though you might not have completed your degree yet, but expect to do so before the position starts). As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, orally as well as literally, are needed. A successful candidate should have a profound interest in software engineering, software modeling or software metrics. Further, since the research work involves developing measurement dashboards and corresponding analytical techniques, good programming skills are important.
