Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
Department of Forest Ecology and Management in Umeå
1 PhD student in the research education subject: Soil Science
Intensive studies of forestry and climate change effects on catchment processes
The position will be based at the new and dynamic department of Forest Ecology and Management, SLU, Umeå, Sweden ( http://www.seksko.se/) . Umeå is located in the boreal forest (c. 15 km from the Baltic Sea and 300 km from the Scandinavian mountain range on the border of Norway). Our major research focus is on the boreal forest, but we have activities also in other biomes. We have the highest ambitions in science and teaching, excellent international contacts, modern technical facilities and access to unique long-term forest ecosystem experiments and other field sites. SLU in Umeå shares Campus with Umeå University (www.umu.se). Umeå has 110 000 inhabitants, located a one-hour flight from Stockholm.
We are recruiting a PhD student to join the large interdisciplinary project ?A state of the art modeling and decision support system for mitigating the effects of intensified forest production and climate change on water quality (ForWater)?. The main objective of the ForWater program is to achieve a scientifically based assessment of water quality under pressures from climate change and forest management. The ForWater program will be based on an interdisciplinary approach where nutrients, metals, base cations, persistent organic pollutants and dissolved organic carbon will be studied using a common field-based research platform.
This Ph. D student position will focus on intensive studies of forestry and climate change effects on catchment processes. The aim is to provide an improved understanding of the effects of scale and seasonality on hydrology and biogeochemical processes in forested cathments. Research questions: How will the biogeochemistry of N, DOC, Hg and POPs in different landscape components be affected by forestry and climate change? How do catchments of different sizes respond to changes in the external drivers? How can we translate an understanding of processes at the small scale into an explanation of patterns and dynamics at a larger scale?
The goal of the project will be reached by analyses of already available data and modeling. The project is closely linked to the Krycklan experimental catchment study in Northern Sweden ( http://ccrew.sek.slu.se/) . The project is a collaboration between researchers at SLU, and the Universities of Uppsala and Lund.
Qualifications
Prerequisites for the position include 180 ECTS or equivalent, with a minimum of 120 ECTS in a field relevant to soil science, water chemistry, forestry, hydrology or environmental sciences. Skills in GIS programs or biogeochemical modeling are considered a merit. The position is available for a four-year period (48 months) of research with guaranteed financial support during this period. and further at: www.slu.se/ny-doktorand
