Doctoral student in Building Materials

Subject description

For environmental reasons, Portland cement is gradually being replaced by cement mixed with mineral additives.

How this will affect the cement and thus the concrete salt frost resistance is in the current situation poorly known, which means that a number of new models must be developed.

The purpose of the model developed in this project is that it should be able to identify the material properties that are most important to the material's resistance to salt frost degradation. The aim is that the model can deal with concrete with different amounts of added additives. The model will e.g. models moisture absorption during freezing. This part of the project is done in collaboration with IFSTTAR in Paris. The model needs input in the form of measurements such as ice formation, surface properties and the impact of the air void structure. This is done in cooperation with NTNU in Trondheim and at the division of Building materials at Lund University. The model is then tested against results from previous field and laboratory studies (e.g. there are several large laboratory studies going on in Sweden right now). This means that the student will be staying both at NTNU in Trondheim and at IFSTTAR in Paris for periods of time, but you will be employed in Lund and will spend the most of your time there.

The project is partially funded by Nanocem (a European research consortium), which means that the project is presented each year to the consortium members at one of the consortium meetings.

Work duties

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Admission requirements

A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

• has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
• has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle

A person meets the specific admission requirements for third cycle studies in Building Materials if he or she has:

• at least 90 credits in subjects of relevance to the field including at least 60 second -cycle credits and a second-cycle degree project of at least 30 credits in the field, or
• a second-cycle degree in a relevant field.

Additional requirements:

• Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria

Selection for third-cycle studies is based on the student's potential to profit from such studies. The assessment of potential is made primarily on the basis of academic results from the first and second cycle. Special attention is paid to the following:

Knowledge and skills relevant to the thesis project and the subject of study such as experimental experience and modelling of porous materials An assessment of ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems. Written and oral communication skills Other experience relevant to the third-cycle studies, e.g. professional experience. Other experience relevant to the present project is experience in studying cementitious materials experience in laboratory work on cementitious materials experience in modelling of cementitious materials

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.

Conditions
Only those admitted to third cycle studies may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. Third cycle studies at LTH consist of full-time studies for 4 years. A doctoral studentship is a fixed-term employment of a maximum of 5 years (including 20% departmental duties). Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1998:80).
