1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology
Understanding controls on the delivery and use of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in boreal forest streams and lakes
The position will be based in the Department of Forest Ecology and Management, SLU, Umeå, Sweden (
http://www.seksko.se/) . Umeå is located in the boreal forest (c. 15 km from the Baltic Sea and 300 km from the Scandinavian mountain range on the border of Norway). Our major research focus is on the ecology and biogeochemistry of boreal forests, but we have activities also in other biomes. We have the highest ambitions in science and teaching, excellent international contacts, modern technical facilities and access to unique long-term forest ecosystem experiments and other field sites. SLU in Umeå shares Campus with Umeå University (www.umu.se). Umeå has 110 000 inhabitants, located a one-hour flight from Stockholm.
We are recruiting a PhD student to conduct research that addresses the dynamics, fate, and overall importance of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in aquatic ecosystems of boreal landscapes, including streams, wetlands, and lakes. This research will be conceptually linked and supported by two recently funded projects in the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at SLU, both aimed at understanding how the biogeochemistry of boreal landscapes may be influenced by future changes in forest management and climate. The first of these projects (NICAF) seeks to understand how carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles are coupled in boreal forests and soils, and how these C and N interactions may change over successional time, and as a function of variation in external nutrient inputs. The objectives of the second project (ForWater) are to assess and predict changes in water quality that may result from altered forest management strategies and potential climate changes.
Boreal streams and lakes are typically organic-rich ecosystems, with concentrations of DON that can be much higher than dissolved inorganic N (DIN) forms. Despite its potential importance, however, there is still very little known about the cycling of DON in aquatic habitats. This PhD student will carry out research that could include: 1) characterizing the composition and bioavailability of the DON pool in riparian, stream, and lake ecosystems, 2) determining the controls on DON uptake kinetics in riparian and aquatic ecosystems, and 3) experimentally addressing the use and fate of DON under changing backgrounds of inorganic N and labile C availability. The goals of this project will be reached through a combination of descriptive and experimental approaches in the field and laboratory. Ryan Sponseller (Department of Forest Ecology and Management, SLU), Ann-Kristin Bergström (Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Umeå University), and Hjalmar Laudon (Department of Forest Ecology and Management, SLU) will supervise the research.
