Description of CIRCLE
CIRCLE is an interdisciplinary centre for innovation research spanning several faculties at Lund University.

Research at CIRCLE aims to understand and explain how innovation can contribute to a good society and tackle societal challenges like economic crises, climate change or increased globalization of economic activities. This aim requires advanced insights into how knowledge is created and diffused in organizations, networks, regions, countries, and globally; how knowledge is turned into innovations; and which societal conditions promote the creation and diffusion of innovation. A designated research platform at CIRCLE aims to better understand and explain the role of eco-innovation in sustainable transitions. In doing so, it seeks to identify and unpack the specific characteristics, drivers and barriers of eco-innovation. A detailed description of CIRCLE's research programs and Annual Reports can be found at www.circle.lu.se.

Job assignments

This position is within the research area concerning sustainability transitions. The main empirical focus of the project is transition pathways towards sustainable plastics.

The research will be developed in connection with the MISTRA-funded research project 'STEPS - Sustainable Plastics and Transition Pathways'. This project is run in collaboration with researchers from various departments at Lund University along with Swedish Agricultural University and Swerea IVF. In addition, stakeholders associated to the programme represent the entire value chain, from raw material suppliers to waste handling and recycle companies. The overall aim of STEPS is to play a key role in instigating and accelerating the transition towards sustainable plastics by strengthening the knowledge and research base for technology- and product development and innovation, developing and assessing key niche products with industrial partners, and analysing the sustainability, institutional and policy implications of potential transition pathways.

Duties

The doctoral candidate programme amounts to 240 credits. It formally ends with the doctoral candidate publicly defending his/her printed doctoral thesis. The holder of the position has as his/her primary obligation to successfully fulfil his/her third cycle education ending with a doctoral degree (PhD). Regulations concerning appointment as a doctoral student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7 §§.

The doctoral studies in this position will be related to the research project 'STEPS - Sustainable Plastics and Transition Pathways', coordinated by Professor Rajni Hatti Kaul. The topics of the candidate's doctoral work must have strong relevance for and be closely related to the STEPS research project. Specifically, the research of the doctoral candidate will fall under work package 3 in the project, which is concerned with the systemic aspects of innovative plastic technologies in relation to policy, governance, consumer behaviour, innovation processes and business. The doctoral candidate should outline a more specific research agenda within this broad topic. Theoretically the work should primarily be anchored in economic geography, innovation systems literature and the literature on sustainable transitions.

The position presupposes that the successful applicant is accepted as a doctoral student at the PhD-program at the Department of Human Geography. Curriculum and guidelines can be found at www.keg.lu.se/en/research/phd-education/phd-in-human-geography. The doctoral candidate will share his/her time between CIRCLE and the Department of Human Geography.
